In what temperature 300 freezes?

Post by jtbo »

Has anyone experienced such cold temperature that 300 would refuse to co-operate?

My record is only -42C and it did work fine, except brake servo did not help at all, steering was so stiff that I need strenght of both arms, gearbox felt like it would be without synhcro rings and filled with syrup, also suspension did not move so it was like driving rock sledge and tires were not round, so I could do only 30kph as vibrations were too high, also stopping without brake servo was bit slow, however when I lifted my foot from throttle rears tried to lock up because of resistance of drive gear.

It still did move and got better after few minutes, luckily did not need to travel very far as coolant was in solid form :?

Would it work still in -50C ? Maybe needs at least better coolant?

hi

the newest volvo coolant (blue/turquoise) 55% strength can go down to -45C

Same price as the usual Comma etc brands. Awaiting some info from volvo on its service life though....

PS..how did you sort your un-sealing front (or was it rear?) crankshaft seal.

I've seen a few engines of another brand wear of mark in the crankshaft where the seal sits. A new one then won't seal either.

Solution at work is to change the crankshaft but a few race engine builders I've spoken to mention fitting a ring to the crank and machining that down to size.

How did you get on to that subject in the middle of Summer Jani ? We've got +30°C here at the moment ;-)

The most my amb temp gauge has ever shown was -15°C, last winter. Usually I get pics of record-breaking moments like that, but it was too cold for the camera  Other than the starter turning slowly the car drove just as it always does. Was a great excuse to fit the grille cover too!

I guess -15°C is a mild frost for you ;-)

I have not been able to solve that issue yet, but I have planned to swap whole motor instead, someday it can take again bit more time, but at least I have time to sort out engine mounts and strut top mounts now

Come to think about, my cold weather experience might have caused part of that oil leak too as it was next spring from that when I did spot this leak. Car also stood on parking lot without too much use between those two cases.

I will probably install turbo lump for it and try to fight with MOT office to get it approved with Megasquirt, if not then with stock Efi (in reality disguised MS).

Summer!? I shot these 4 days ago...

Four days ago was the hottest day of the year over here, 37°C :-) Which reminds me, I need a new water pump and possibly a new radiator ...

It was hottest day only because you got our heat too
Wind was from north here, so cold air mass replaced warm in here, but warm sea stops this cool air from getting to Estonia and probably low pressure from near UK helps in there too so even if Sweden and Norway gets cold weather, it never reaches to Germany, well until sea cools down.

We have often clouds because low pressures are constantly created near UK at north atlantic, then jet stream from east coast US to northern europe seem to bring those over Norway and Sweden to here, but Ural mountains cause another stream which makes sure clouds slow down a lot over Finland.

I don't know too well weather over Germany, but I'm pretty sure you have warm cloudless nights which are great for astro photography so I envy your nice weather

Oh yes, I did browse trough a lot of satellite images today, trying to determine if weather is ok or not for some photoshoots, still bit worried from air humidity as if weather cools by night as much as they predict, then I will have serious issues with damp, lenses will get all wet again, if really bad then there is fog from ground level to 10-15m height, which again is not very good for me :?

One good thing has come from astronomy hobby, I'm starting to get hang of what weather will be like for next 6 hours and it is not hard to know if soon will rain or not, still lot to learn.

Here in southwestern Finland it's luckily somewhat rare to have frost in August. Even the winters are comparatively mild. These pics are from late December / early January this year.

Oh, and about the cold - the coldest I remember was in January 1987, it was -35C for a few days. We had an almost new Nissan Micra back then. The cooling system had been filled (at the factory) to withstand down to ... -35C, and so it happened that on one morning there were some green drops on the snow under the car. The system wasn't frozen though and the car started and ran just fine. That day we went to a garage and they refilled the system with a -45C mixture. I think the next day it got relatively warm already, only -30C so the refill wasn't really needed. But on normal winters all we get is something like -10 to -15C, going below -20C doesn't happen every year, and going below -30C happens perhaps once a decade or so.

Remembering such things about 1987 makes me feel like an old fart... :(

I can't wait to use the heated seats again. I don't think I've driven without my window down for about 3 months! Volvos are warm cars :D
