I'm back..........................
I'm back..........................
Well, my excursion into Metro ownership has been eventful to say the least.
A week after buying it someone reversed into the car causing a fair amount of damage to the offside rear 1/4 panel. Having relieved the guy of £150 to cover the repairs I decided to entrust the car to some friends of mine who have their own garage and a particular love of Metros. They repaired the 1/4 panel plus some minor parking damage to the nearside front wing and nearside 1/4 panel caused by the previous elderly lady owner. Whilst they did a cracking job of the repairs the paint match was miles out so I ended up doing it all again myself.
The car then developed an annoying habit of breaking down for no apparent reason which totally defied logic. I ended up adopting a 'belts and braces' approach and replaced the fuel pump, coil, points, condensor, etc etc which seemed to cure the problem.
Then a few nights ago at 11.30pm I heard a noise and went outside in shorts, t shirt and slippers with torch in hand to investigate - unfortunately I didn't take my phone. I found some scrote had broken into the Metro by punching a screwdriver through the nearside door skin next to the lock barrel. Guess what? He was still inside the car. He tried to leg it but after a brief struggle I managed to shut him inside the car and used HIS mobile phone to dial 999. The police arrived within less than 5 minutes and arrested him - it later turned out he'd only been released from prison 12 hours earlier..!!
The Metro is notoriously easy to break into and it now feels like a bit of a target so its time for us to part company.
Anybody know of a decent 340 for sale by any chance????

We had to let you learn the hard way that all retro cars are inferior to the 300 series
There's a good few floating around, see recent topics on the forum.

Hi mate.
Sorry to here about the car.
Well done on nicking the low life trying to steal it.
I hope you gave him a good kicking before the cops arrived.
Cheers Mark.

No, I didn't give him a kicking - I didn't see the point of leaving myself open to allegations of assault. In any event my wife is a police office and doesn't wholly approve of my vigilante approach. Nonetheless, I've had more arrests this week than she has...

Cheers mate. There's a nice one on Ebay but it seems a bit pricy at £800..

Re: I'm back..........................
Sorry to hear that mate. I have similar problems potentially - the company I work for has been put up for sale and we've already had loads of redundancies. I don't know from one day to the next what's going to happen but I'm guessing I won't starve.
Your 360 looks nice but I'd be looking for a 1.4 - I'm tempted by the one on Ebay but the price is a bit high and ideally I need to move the Metro first and I'm not sure who'll buy it with a hole in the door skin...

Re: I'm back..........................
I thought I might see you back over here Ian
I've still got my Metros but have also come back to Volvo ownership, albeit a 460. But I've only had it a week and I've already broken down twice, electrical problems surprise surprise. I wanted to get another 340 but there's wasn't anything around I fancied or near enough. There was a 360 in Bristol on Autotrader that was tempting me but it looked too nice for what I wanted i.e. just a winter runabout.
I hope you manage to find something decent. I wish I'd kept my 340 now...

Hi Rob, I've enjoyed the Metro in parts but I think its time to move on. My association with the club has been somewhat chequered as you're probably aware and it least in 340 Land you don't have to pussy-foot around committees!!!

Good to have you back, Ian!
That sounds like one of life's precious moments when you think "hey, there IS a god"
