Re: My new 360
Ignore Foggy, Rupert is correct here, you need twin SU's it's simple. Just because it's a project car doesn't mean it should drive like a dog
Granted Webers will give you more if you really want to tune the hell out of it, but do you?

Re: My new 360
How did I know that Chris would be along
Tune either sort of carb wrong, and the car will be a dog...there's nothing wrong with either design...except that the SUs don't flow as well.
I know where there's a K if you can find someone who'll weld the rear thrust bearing ring back onto it
I could attach it, but no promises can be made about the resulting engineering tolerances
The slow-down at the top end will almost certainly be the undersized carb. The engine is being choked once the airflow demands increase. Put a pair of them on and that should get much better. Of course put a pair of Webers on and it'll get better still...
cheers

Re: My new 360
Haha.. this old debate...
I'm reluctant to bother with twin SU's as it'll involve a custom manifold, which will easily exceed buying a Weber bolt pattern manifold off the shelf. For an inferior performance upgrade item I don't really see it being worth the effort.
I did suspect it'd be the carb (and I'd assume the standard cam) holding it back... on paper it should be quite good engine wise though, I gather the 405 head flows marginally better than the 531 as I think it has larger valves?

Any new suspension parts will improve the handling by 1000%, no need to lower it ... It's not a Mk1SteveP wrote:As for a drop, probably not as I'm happy with it looking grandad specI dunno, the suspension does need something doing to it... but I'll probably just go for gas shocks, stiffer front springs and maybe an upgrade to glt rear leafs.
I'll be interested to see what you're doing performance-wise though, as I suspect my DLS will have the same carb/engine/cam setup?

I think I agree... the ride height isn't bad for a 'stock' looking car, and I kinda want it to look fairly standard anyway.trabitom99 wrote:Any new suspension parts will improve the handling by 1000%, no need to lower it ... It's not a Mk1

Yep pretty sure your DLS will be identical Tom. I need to find out what cam it has actually, but whatever it is its certainly not designed for enthusiastic driving!

Re: My new 360
Unfortunately, I have no idea how my DLS drives anyway, as I've only ever driven it about 10 metres in 7 months
This thread needs another pic:

I loved that chrome tow bar cap
Still reckon the chrome trim rings would have suited your car perfectly, although the leos look great on it too of course ...

Re: My new 360
Poor thing... DLS daily driver while the current daily gets fixed up?
I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the chrome, hence the Leo's and Hella grille - but I think it's alright now, I quite like the rest of the chrome guttering/bumper capping etc
The tow bar cover is pretty hilarious though, wonder if it's original
Perhaps? The towbar is a geniune Volvo towbar (which is actually a bit of an abomination!)

Unfortunately not, the DLS has no MOT and dodgy brakes, whereas the daily is "only" rusty ...SteveP wrote:Poor thing... DLS daily driver while the current daily gets fixed up?

Having recently fitted one I think they're great, and wish I'd got around to it sooner

Re: My new 360
The reason I love SU/Stroms is the near idle throttle response, they just don't have the flat spots that fixed chokes have
Tbf, I had no idea that both the B14 and the B172 had such flat spots until I was forced to drive a car on SU's but it really makes a hell of a difference.
Sensible option is of course to bin all of it and run FI. The last week has seen some minor tweakage to Fakes ECU which has done wonders for flat spots and my idle

Re: My new 360
Well... it now has its first problem
Mainly that the carb is buggered... leaving me stranded about a mile away from my destination with what felt like about 10bhp (Not much chance of getting up ANY gradient!). Initially it started idling low about 3 weeks ago at Griz's meet, then recently would stall when warm... but then the symptoms seemed to go away... until last Sunday! Then pretty suddenly the car was severely lacking in power, but no misfiring or stuttering - just no real difference in power between tickling the throttle and with the throttle wide open. Called the AA out in the end and diagnosis is the piston in the carb is sticking - when provoked the car revs up as normal. I actually reckon it's been doing this almost since I've had it because it seemed to rev way more freely when provoked and I'd always complained about its reluctance to rev beyond 4k. Luckily L14AM is coming to the rescue with a spare Stromberg CD175 which I can hopefully just swap out and keep the spare one for a rebuild on the bench. So i would therefore like to conclude... Stromberg's for the lose
Fingers crossed the carb will arrive and I can find a dry day before Sept 11th!!!

The damper fluid doesn't lubricate the piston, it provides a damping force against it.
How long have I told you to get on and do a rebuild on that carb
