I always jack my car from the tubular cross member when it hasn't got its sump guard on.
You might get away with it in the 340, I think I used to do this, but on the 360 I bent it into the engine which is very close. The bolt plate brackets that are welded to the tube buckled.
As for welding on the sump guard to a tube, I would say the tube plates will buckle before the chassis as in the 360. You'd need to reinforce the ends first then you are in new terratory as to whether the chassis will take it, personally I'd try for rubber mounting somehow.
