Do the tie rod bushes at the same time bud, you've got to take it off to do the wishbones anyway and they are a huge contributing factor to holding the fore aft location.

Re: Nimminz' GLT - Gear Lever Support Repair

Post by Nimminz » 05 Aug 2011 11:12 pm

UPDATE:

Little things first,

Labels of date changed on rear dampers (wanted in on the Dymo action :) )

Image
Well, I thorght it was good ...

New 'high performance' Coil lead :)

Feels no different but was free :)

Now onto the main thing.

On wednesday (3/8/11) I lost all gears except 4th. I had been being careful with the gears due to feeling it was wrong and knowing what would happen eventually. Unfortunately it hadn't held in this state for as long as I'd hoped. I managed to find somewhere safe to stop. After the initial SHIIIIIIITTT!!!! thourghts, i started undoing the gear gaitor etc. Finding with this removed i had access to 2nd gear also. This got me home and i left the car for a day.

Today I opened the lot up to below the rubber gaitor to see what the problem was.

Image

The support rod (other end attaches to bellhousing) had snapped off along with a nice big bit of the plate. :/

I tried welding these together but the access was terrible and was hard getting them lined up. Got rather annoyed, hot weather didn't help this. After a breif calm down i thourght about waht to do next.) Definately didn't want to chop the transmission tunnel for improved access so i opted for welding the plate to the tunnel instead. I had heard of this being done before but had the side effect of vibrations and noise from the transmission passing onto the body. Better than a 2-gear car tho. So i've welded it up as best i could with the few bits of 3mm pate i had left. Its not perfect and I am planning on a more permanent solution which will allow the orig. rubber seal and the 'tray' above to fit properly, that will come later. For now i'm just happy to have my gears. Shifts feel much shorter (even than when i got the car a year ago) but don't end softly if you know what i mean, clunks into each gear (just due to the rigid support). I actually like the feel better :D Vibrations... yes, when starting. And on hard acceleration/ high revs, havent worked out which yet (only tested it for 15 mins) but I can live with them.

Image

Welding is better than it looks in the photos

Still need to adjust the reverse light switch bracket thing as it is slightly out making 1st and 2nd a bit difficult.

This bit

But aye, mission accomplished! proper chuffed with today

Re: Nimminz' GLT - Gear lever support repair

Vibrations with the body-mounted support for the gear lever comes mainly from the support bar, which connects to the bellhousing on the cars with a Volvo engine.

What I did was I removed the support bar going to the bellhousing completely and did a completely new support bracket for the gear lever from above. I welded attatchment points on to the transmission tunnel so the bracket can be removed if necessary. No vibrations and it's way more solid than the weirdly designed stock support.

Sorry missed your reply,
If that's the case then my front support will come off. I'm not too bothered by the vibrations, its not uncomfortable.
Eventually i'll make a proper solution.
After driving the car again it feels great, so much better than it ever was before :D

Next mod in the pipeline is getting rid of LE Jetronic and probably the Renix ignition and replacing it with the newer LH Jetronic, see my thread about it here:
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... =5&t=12260
Mainly for the MPG side of things and secondly because I don't have the time / space / suitable working conditions / crane / cash for a full engine swap. This is something i can do and work on without having to do anything to the car till the last little bit, reducing down time (in theory).

Plus its a bit different :)

Pic i took the other day, everyone likes pictures

Not done much since last update
-Moved reverse gear bracket thing so i could get 1st and 2nd again but moved it too far so reversing lights don';t come on if you dont push the gear lever a bit further, will fix that soon though
-Finally fixed the gaitor round the gear lever with a hair clip to hold the sides together.
-Black CB antenna
-PA speaker rigged up to the CB so i can shout at people now haha
-Maglight torch mounted in an old fire extinguisher bracket in boot but might go between driver's seat and door
-Disconnected the electrical connector to the cold start injector, i'm now sure it leaks a bit. But helps a lot when starting now, much easier but still not spot on.

Few crap pictures:

Decided i hate the loud exhaust (old-man-ness is starting haha) going to look for a mk2 2.0 backbox as it's a straight fit but without the stupid bend that the mk3's have.
Still on the lookout for a volvo 940 2.0 1993 onwards so i can strip the LH2.4 fuel and EZK ignition system out and get ready to install it in my 360 :)
Doing the rust is still high on the list of jobs before winter, Just need to save for paint now :D

Cheaper :D

Yeah the MK3 one is crap like, I've had 2, all new rubber hangars etc. but never got it not to knock after a day or two.

Never know, its getting a shovel in for the winter too :D Riot control? haha

Update!

Yesterday night / this morning my headlight cases turned black. Amazing what difference a tin of paint can do :D
Here's some photos, during and after. The three during shots are pretty useless in showing what to do lol

And after:

Thourght this looked quite retro, clicked the wrong thing and it happened

Also:

Got a new flat tyre today, driver's side rear. it was a few years old like and needed replacing. Budgets all round soon then :D

Ordered a mk2 360 backbox for £20 off the bay, which i thourght was fair enough delivered to my door

Thanks for looking,

Sweet progress. Love the shots and processing of the top 3 best. Wicked! I don't know why black surrounds didn't come as standard to be honest. They are Volvos though, after all

Shame bout the flat tyre, budgets for the win!

Seeing your fan and rad, that's another thing I need to sort out. larger rad and twin fan stuff. Thanks for reminding me!

Cheers, They really should have done it standard, maybe things were different 'back then' lol

Aye is a tad crap like, found a just legal budget in the shed so that might go on till i can afford a new budget to match the other side. Thing i'm most gutted about it that tyre seemed especially prone to squealing and squeaking round every roundabout, even if i was going round it like an OAP

Mine's just wired up to a switch, was going to buy a thermo switch thing for it but think the fuel-injection-system-to-be might have fan control built in, so may as well wait to find out. You are very welcome!

Cheers Matt, they do!! :D

I'm not sure there were any B200s except turbos after 93. Probably the best place to find an LH setup for a B200 is a late 240.

Regarding the gear linkage...it's a real shame that it's so difficult to remove it, as repairing it off the car is much more satisfactory. Maybe if we can convince you to swap to a B230F, you could repair it properly while it's all out ;)

cheers

The wiring diagram i've been looking at is from a '93 b200f/g 940. 240 would be best as the looms easier to remove. finding either would be the start of my LH swap :)

Yeah would have been nice to be able to sort it properly. at the moment i'm quite enjoying the welded-to-body gear support, quite...clunky :)

When i finally do an engine swap the engine that goes in will more likely than not have a T at the end too :D Its not convincing i need, its money, a spare car to use, a garage, and more spare time lol

Got my standard Mk2 360 Backbox on, fits quite well, going to rotate the tailpipe to make it fit, which will require the welder.
