Urgent help needed! Gearbox mount/Prop mount gone/Blown box?

Post by Callum »

Hi, well i was giving the Ovlov a bit of the sideways action as you do, as i straighten up i hear a loud clicking/clunking noise from the OSR. Cant see anything amiss but when i pull away theres a clunk and occasionally between gear changes. At first the OSR wheel was skipping and hopping a bit under slow cornering but that seems to have gone by itself. And sometimes it grinds a bit between shifts. Im wondering if a mount has gone which would explain the sudden crunching (Ie linkage not in the right place) Ill have a look tommorw in the light but can anyone advice on common things to check? Also, possibly tied in, since ive had it on idle the car rocks a fair bit which i suspect engine mounts, could this extra starin be what possibly killed a diff/box mount? Theres a slight leak from the box where it mounts to the diff which i need to sort but i would have thought the box wouldnt run dry just like that, and would expect a constant noise if the box had, had it.

Many thanks :)

My guess, by the fact the noise is only coming from one side, is that you've bugged a driveshaft/cv joint, but im now that knowledgeable about these cars so i might be wrong :) Best way to check i would have thought it jack it up, get under there and grab hold of the driveshaft and see if it moves?

Well had look, having a bad day, backed on to the drive on ramp type things, one slipped out and split the jacking point on the NS sill :( Anyway, OS shaft has a lot more in out movement than the other side, no mounts seem to be gone. But i suspect somethings gone wrong in the diff. Jacking the osr up and in gear it spins a good 3/4 the way before stopping on the gear, maybe the thudingwhen pulling away. With it in gear itll spin a bit but i can feel a tightspot so to speak. So tommorow im going to drain the diff fluid and check for any shrapnel, then pull the cover off and have a nosey inside. Any suggestions what to look for would be really appreciated!

And think i relised wht broke it, half my drift was on loose gravel, and as it caught grip on the tarmac maybe that was enough to do the damage....?

Could anyone tell me if diffs from a 1.7 or 1.4 in either 4 or 5 speed would fit my 1.4 5speed?

Cheers

All transaxles (as the diff is part of the gearbox the whole unit is called a transaxle) from 1.4's and 1.7's are interchangeable. So you can get a 1.4 5 speed or put in a 1.7 5 speed, the only difference is ratio's which i doubt you'l notice too much.

When you start talking about taking the diff from a 5 speed and putting it onto the back of your 4 speed box, thats when problems arise, but i wont go into that so it doesnt get confusing :) Thomas.............

I'd try and keep to a 1.4 3.82 5 speed diff, as the 3.64 on a 1.4 would make it significantly slower imo

To make your life easier bud, grab the complete transax from him if you can. I reckon.... that knowing the island there might still be a grey F plated 340 blueline in Ryde (1.7, so 3.64) as well as a C plated GLE (3.36) as I've never seen Ryde empty cars out the yard, they just seem to pile them higher.

Rookley I'm not sure what's there anymore.

Swaping the box and diff as a unit means you don't need to cock about with shim's and preloads. I'd give you a drink for the broken one if you weren't keeping it, I'm after a spare box and diff casing to hack up and not having to pay courier would be handy ;)
