How many regulars?

Post by jtbo » 04 May 2012 08:07 am

Is it my impression or is it really that our handful of regulars are less regular nowdays?

So you guys have too modern daily rides and are lured to dark side of modern comforts and stuff? Get some crappy 340's to desperately keep on street without budget and enjoy parts hunting, that should set you back on track

I try and drive mine.... it just has other ideas!

I'm *still* not driving it (on the 3rd day of the month) because even though I tax'd it, I had to tax it online and the disc hasn't arrived yet. Yes, I know technically I can drive it legally as is, but I'm paranoid and get pulled by police enough round here to not need something else to have to explain. Having an old car seems to be enough...

What I don't understand is how the damn thing seems to have access to my bank account though. Since it's passed it's VIC, it's managed to sit on the drive and still cost me in excess of £400, with nothing shiny bought :(

I'm using mine... sporadically. It makes me appreciate it more and I don't get annoying running an old car everyday that way.

The V40 T4 is better on fuel and goes well. Also costs significantly less to run and buy than the GLT  Although I'm probably going to have to sell that soon and get something more efficient. I think that's the way forward. Daily driver that is undemanding and costs as little to run as possible and project cars for something interesting.

I'm using mine daily for commuting, social, shows, seeing relatives, drifting, everything! Wouldn't have it any other way.

Hi Jani.
My mk1 is on the road as a daily driver. When the tax runs out in July, the GLS
will be taking its place for a year.
Cheers Mark.

Thing is are both of your 300's that were doing that mileage still working correctly, and did you have to do more than just put fuel in it? ;)

Besides, you do that mileage between 2 cars!!

I use mine only when I feel like driving it, got a V70 VAN for everyday use (I might come across any 300 series spares, can't leave those behind now can I?)

I look bad in this company, I don't have single car that would have MOT at the moment, taxes are due for two, even my Renault bicycle is acting up, while I just got new rear wheel and things for it, pedal failed and in process crank lost all thread in it so there is no way to attach pedal to it, of course cranks are stuck too and I'm broke, still need to buy new crank set.

Even my backup bicycle seem to have an issues, rear sproket seem to be some how loose and whole wheel is having some serious play, so can't even ride a bicycle at the moment.

343 still produces only 100mbar from EMV to pull up side and I can't find reason why as nothing seem to change that amount to any direction, that is all that it would need for MOT but it is quite efficient show stopper, but hey I have drive 200km with it total and it has cost me already quite a bit to service it.

Even too comfy modern french crap would need at least new tires for MOT as mixing winter and summer type is not allowed.

So no driving or riding for me. Again I can bury hopes to get working 300 for summer, well I would not have enough income to pay petrol either.

Good thing that closest shop is only 4.5km away so it is only 9km walk.

I'm currently doing about 20k a year. The 340 needed regular fiddling (maybe 10 minutes at a time) but the 360 hasn't needed anything other than fuel.

The 340's on the road all year but it not getting much use over winter due to mainly not going anywhere  and salt avoidance :P. It did have an outing in the snow however. The fact is I spend all day driving the transit and pick up anything I need on route, whilst out and about already, to save juice. Got some trips planned this summer, but less miles than last year, plus the 2 or 3 car based events (V3M meet and VOC)

Did you mean regulars on the forum jtbo?

It is a bit quiet, I've not posted so much lately but look almost daily. It's my busy time of year for work and I'm still to start work on the MK1. Also have quite a bit of gardening to do at this time of year as we grow our own. No, not that....spuds etc

I'm still restoring, but one day!.. maybe this year.

The problem is that more and more 300s will need restoring and lets face it most are not going to get restored and will eventually be too difficult to repair (bodywork +chassis mainly).

Hmm, I disagree. If you look at cars of the 70s or even 60s and how many of those are around - how many are left? Rather a few, sure there are some rarities but those are the ones that were made of cheese. There will be less 300s but always an enthusiasts market to support them. Just look at how popular the series is now - give it maybe 5 more years and we'll start getting parts made for it again, a lot like other classics.

As for bodywork and chassis... Bzzzzt. Image
Think of how much cars from previous eras have rotted. There's still good examples to be found, and the ones that aren't are patched up.

In all honesty I think that cars in general will get too expensive to run before all the 300s run out. Even "modern" cars do 35mpg, that's horrendous!
