Problem starting 360 - no fuel in carb?

Post by Speedy88 »

Hi guys,
Tried to start the 360 and the carb has all dried out. There's no fuel in the filter either however this is fuel in the line that feeds to the top of the carb. There's also fuel in the line from the tank although as far as I can see, none of it is moving.

I've cranked the engine quite a lot and the fuel filter is still dry. Taking the cover off the carb, I can't see any fuel in the barrels when I look in. It also doesn't smell that strongly of fuel - I'd expect that, being a carb.

I had a friend look in while I was pumping the throttle and cranking the engine but he said no fuel was spraying or anything.

Bit stumped, I'm not sure why fuel isn't going in :(

I can't hear the fuel pump when I turn the key but I don't think it's a "prime" system, is it?

Bit of help would be lovely.

Going by off the top of my headness.... I reckon it's a mechanical pump (all the 340's on carbs are). I'd hunt that down and operate by hand for a bit. I do agree it sounds like that at fault, but a jam jar of fuel and 2 bits of hose can prove quite easily.

(Yes, standard rules apply, don't smoke, operate spark plugs, fire up any electrics done by Foggy in the vicinity of the fuel...)

Is it going to be a pump on the engine? There's something near to the carb that looks like it might be a pump. It's a little small though!

That's it! I'll syphon some fuel in to it first because I'm fairly sure it will just be an air lock. It was working fine when I parked it up...

Don't bother syphoning, just pour some fuel down the throat of the carb and start the engine. If it doesn't get the pump going its fubared, but make sure you have enough fuel in the tank. £5 will not do it these days from a dry tank.

Sorted although your tecnique didn't work ride_on, I still had to syphon it through the pump first.

Change that pump Speedy, it's dying on it's arse.

The BB was doing that when I was at Mac's last Sept. If you primed the pump sans filter between pump and carb it would work. Then with the float bowl full, the filter could be replaced and work. As soon as it was left a few days to dry out. Same problem.

Roll on December when it suffering a bit of starvation heading to Belfast, by teatime in Glasgow it was able to escape Asda.

New pump is able to sook nae bother from dry with or with filter and even with a jumbo filter.

So my suggestion would be get a fresh pump ready to swap, because it may go from weak sooking to nae sooking at any moment.

I mean a big slug of fuel, like 1cm in the bottom of a jam jar. Don't open the throttle and pour it in, the throttle butterfly will help atomise it. It should work.

Hum - slight problem is that they appear to be made of unobtainium. I don't think it's worth wasting my time phoning Volvo. Most places seem to think that it has an in-tank pump.

Any ideas anyone if theres a company that still produces these?

edit:
Ah! I'm getting warmer. This seems reasonable:

Now sorted. Will leave this post here for future searching 8)
