B200E Exhaust fittings - problems

Post by kelvingenders » 25 Jun 2012 08:57 am

Just wondered if anyone could help me with a few exhaust issues.

I've notice there is a lot of vibration through my car. I've notice the downpipe (connected to the exhaust manifold is touching the chassis/cross member and this is causing some major vibration. The rest of the exhaust, except the rear muffler is is connected with hard fittings i.e. has no give or flex. Hence when the car accelerates, the exhaust doesn't flex and this is causing problems.

Has anyone got picture of fixtures and fitting (Not from the haynes manual) of how the original set up looks or how this has been modified.

P.s. My car has two hooks (presumably) from the 340 1.7 exhaust system. Has any 360 owner modified their system to incorporate these.

Cheers Kelvin. :360: sm6

If you've got excessive vibration check your sump isn't sitting on your crossmember. this will lower your exhaust too. if it is your engine mounts need replacing.

I had the opposite problem, my exhaust was fine at the downpipe but the central bracket broke and the rest flapped about, eventually causing the downpipe to break. I decided to ditch the centrebox (as it's heavy) and used the340 mounts, the hooks you describe. Still need to weld the bar to the exhaust, at the mo it just sits on it.

Your problem does sound a tad like engine mounts :/

Any ideas of where I can get engine mounts from?

Kevin, have you actually checked your engine mounts first?

My exhaust being pretty pikey and hacked together, vibrates through the car if it makes contact with the floor at the rear. It sometimes happens. It could be a multitude of things.

The mounts look fine..and when revving the engine, very little movement from the engine in the bay- I'm assuming that if they were in need of placement that there would be lots of this?. I think its the down pipe and mid-muffler that's giving the vibration. Thinking of taking it to Exhaust place to see if they can hang it differently, to make it more flexible

Its not completely abnormal, the non-PS B200s have a tendancy to touch on the cross member, a friends 360 GLEi had the same problem with an non-OE downpipe. I'm pretty sure my mounts where ok 15 years ago and I had that problem with a brand new Volvo downpipe. The original downpipe was fine.

In the end I cut the corner off the radius arm plate to gain 2-3mm clearance, worked perfectly.

Ride on, I'm with you.....engine mounts in the 360 GLT are solid....downpipe needs a gentle heat and smack with a hammer. I was considering taking of the heat shield and wrapping it in heat/ exhaust bandages instead, so that i didn't have to attach it to the bar mount and gives it a little easier access . what do you think?

The bar mount is there to stop the downpipe or manifold cracking, you want all the mounts on if possible.

Not sure what heat shield you are talking about, mine only had a small shield on the steering rack.

This one looks like the shape of a lamb chop and fixes onto the top of the down pipe and connect to the bar

No idea mate, we have a Y shaped bar that connects the down pipe to the bell housing/block bolts, and an angled plate the secures the exhaust to the torque tube-bell housing bolts. No other heat shields I am aware of. Picture?

Ah ok, its not a heat shield, it just supports the exhaust and is strain relief for the weaker flanges and welded joints in the downpipe and manifold. You want to keep that or replace other parts more often, not sure how long but if you giving the boot alot I'd say a year or 2 and problems will develop.
