360 dipstick

Hello, the dipstick on my 360 does not have obvious max and min marks, just a flattened bit with a crosshatch pattern pressed into it. I take it that the oil level should be somewhere on this pattern.
1988 340 1.4 GL, 218k, 5 door (Grey Bess). Gone to CBA.
1991 340 1.7 GL, 64k, 5 door, petrol blue (Deep Blue).
1988 360 2.0 GLE, 140k, 5 door, ocean blue metallic (Blue Bess).
1989 340 1.7 GL, 108k, 3 door (Red Ness).

fit a oiltemp sensor and you'll know why :wink:

I do have an oil temp sensor, and I'm totally mystified...?

with oil at low levels, the temperature will rise much further under heavy load.

more oil in the pan means a higher thermal capacity. oil temperature will be more constant, and generally lower.


on modern-day engines, oil level can be critical to prevent eery ticking noises on startup. (hydraulic valve lifters)

Understood. My oil temps have been a little higher than usual since I fitted the twin carbs, and lost some oil from my front cam seal (at around the same time). I hadn't associated the temperature rise with oil loss, but it's a fair point!
