1.4 Running lean due to K & N

Post by 340GLT » 04 Sep 2005 06:06 pm

Hi guys i just thought i would share some info with you.
I know some people were saying how i needed to Re Jet after fitting the K & N, well i was speaking to my Grandad today whilst i had my car in the Garage and he said he thought it was running lean. So We whipped out the plugs and noticed a whitish brown build up on the plugs, so this looked to be the case.
Anyway replaced the plugs and set the car up on the Co2 tester and the Carbon content was nill so We altered the mixture to get the Co level somewhere near where it should be.
I then took the car out to test!! What a difference. The car is much quicker, sounds better and accelerates quicker!!! Job Done!!!!
So Thanks Grandad!!! lol
Cheers Adam

It must have been running lean b4 as a k&n doen not make that much difference.
Nice to hear it is running well.

Well when she went through the MOT not so long ago she was fine. So the only explanation for running lean is the filter.
I must admit the plugs wont have helped matters but it HAS improved anyways so i'm happy!!!

i thought you could only adjust the idle mixture, and the 'normal' mixture was set by the jet size?

True, but the main jets add to the idle circuit, not replace them when the engine is under load/revved.
Hence if the idle is lean, the mixture will be slightly lean throughout the rev range.

I'm willing to bet it's still somewhat lean on full throttle...but you'll never know without a lambda sensor.

When Husky set my carbs up, they were a long way lean. Maybe they'd been jetted for something else, but if that was just from the stock airbox > ITG filters...

Yeh not being funny but for a 1.4 she is really quick, quicker than any other my grandad has seen so i would like to find out what BHP she is. It would be interesting more than anything else!!! But when i suggested that Rolling road day etc there wasnt that much interest!!!
