Ignition timing

Post by classicswede »

Due to LPG having a very high octane rating I needed to advance the timing a couple of degrees to make the most of the fuel. I've spent ages thinking about haw to do it. When I was looking at my dads 16v engine I noticed the crank position senser BINGO. There was my answer off came my crank sensor a few mins with a file to slot the holes and I now have approx 2deg advance. This has settled my fuel consumption to £5.50 per 100 miles on local driving but i still think I can get better.
Is there a cheap ignition system available? I have seen a set up using the f##d edis but this is no use for lpg as is sparks two cylinders at once (big bang when you have a manifold full of explosive mixture)
Rember I am running a 460 2ltr engine, is any of the fenix seimens units better suited?

Any ideas?

The crank sensor mod was one we discussed a while back, since then and after talking to a few of the renault 5 turbo boys, I have found that if you are carefull, the black sensor part can be nudged along the bracket, if you look at it the bracket has indentations along its length, they just moulded it onto the braket, so if you give it a tap, it will slide along to the next set of indentations. I think that is about 6 degrees, dont do this if you havent got a spare though, you just know it will go tits up if you havent got a backup plan! sm14
The ford edis system is as you say a wasted spark system, as are most aftermarket kits, but as I understood it, as long as the firing order is right, you get one spark at the right time, and one on the exhaust stroke, obviously if the firing order is wrong, you could easily end up with one spark at the right time and one as an inlet valve opens, resulting in a large bang and a manifold turned into shrapnel if it happens to be full of lpg at the time. We have a similar senario when we fit nitrous oxide kits, IE manifold full of seperately injected fuel and nitrous gas, but I havent had this problem on wasted spark systems that have the correct firing order, although I have had a car spit back as the gas (n20) came in, the result was fairly spectacular to say the least sm26 sm44 sm26

Thanks for that Iain.
I think reprograming the renix is the best bet.

I've a had a quick read of the turbo info you sent me, I need to have a look and think about it and a measure up. At lest now I have an idea of where I'm going.

Thanks
