I'm living in the UK and hopefully soon to be owning a 1.4 DL manual - as soon as one pops up for sale that is.
Now I've read a few posts here so I know the max speed of it, (tho i had my mum's 205 diesel up to 104 and that has 55bhp) and I know it should be ok with unleaded.
Its going to be used as a road rally car - RWD fun, and I was just wondering if there were any simple modifications I could do to *squeeze* an extra few horses out the block. I'm abut jubious abouut these piggy back systems because they just seem abit crude to me, but if someone's had any experience with these then let me know.
Anothher thing is I'm looking for some grooved discs for the 340 - I've found some uprated pads but have yet found uprated discs. So again if anyone's found such items - let me know.
going to replace the brake fluid with dot 4 or 5, cant remember which.
thats about it really, look forward to reading ur responses.
Dai, difference for me was £10 between Kar and Beast. Weird people these insurers.
Vented discs were found on mine a little while ago, guesses being made in the general technical forum. Extra horses out a 1.4.... get a later one with electric fan, not going to get too much more really, unless you start playing with the R5 GTT boys, and work out some way of lifting the bonnet and gaffering a turbo in, but for the work thats involoved, a B18FT (1.8 turbo out a 440/60/80) or the 16V that the R19 had would be the way. As mentioned above, what are the reasons for a 1.4, and even more so the DL?

I'd imagine lightness for the DL.. no spec = no weight, and less to remove if you fancy weightlossing (eh foggy ). I should think a 3 door would be your best bet if this is the case.
I reckon, full straight through system, induction kit, elecy fan, cam regrind or performance cam (if you can find one) remove the back seats
Few cosmetic touches, eg GLT seats, door cards, boot spoiler, maybe front and rear bumpers, a bit of colour coding here and there.
Get some lowering springs and some uprated shocks, make some strut braces up, job done.
Remember, just because its a lowish spec and doesnt have a GTi badge doesnt mean to say you cant make it go like crap off a shovel!
All the engine mods above should get you 90bhp - same as a Saxo 1.6 VTR

Al

yup, the insurance is the issue for going for a 1.4... shame really - still costs me £700 to insure it, but thats wiht 0 no claims.
As for performance, i'm a poor student - so cant really afford to do much to the engine, likie port polishing etc. plus I would prolly have to declare the exhaust system to my wonderfull insurers.
Vented discs is however what i was looking for (not grooved sorry) so any ideas as to the cost of those?
jUst found a 340 dl on ebay which i'm going to look at
I know it sounds stupid, but just check the insurance on a '60 GLT, you might be surprised.
Erm, try and get out as much heavy stuff as you can, as Al says, you could probably ditch the blower, get a non sunroof'ed one, erm, must be loads of stuff they wouldn't notice....
Can't see too much from those ebay pictures, a lot of bargins have been had, just follow the usual precautions
false hope - email from ebay favourite searches said 22 miles away but I've just checked it and its up in birmingham. so abit further than I want to go really living in southampton.
