I am aware my volvo 1.7 has a carb setup. And that when you want to upgrade the induction system you use a circular air filter which sites on top off the carb.
Could i mount a 45degree pipe to the carb and plonk a cone air filter in front of like, This setup is usually used on cars with single TB. Cold air feed.
Or do i have to use one of them circular air filters? I jus want some throaty induction noise from upfront when i plant my foot lol!
Yeah, you can do either ('pancake' filter, or piping to a cone), but do bear in mind that you may well suffer carb icing in winter. Either will result in the sound you want!
this is the 1st carb i have had which will see me through the winter period.
My rad has got holes in it, but the car is fine in the cold doesnt even let the temp get upto half stays kool all the time. When it was warmer about 2months ago and i was in traffic gave me some trouble then thats about it.
What else should i be carfeull about for the winter? sorry for sounding dumb but i dnt want my trusty volvo to break down on me!
carb icing may happen in moisty, cold weather. (not freezing cold, just above zero)
due to the evaporating fuel, there is a chilling effect on the carburettor. if the moisture in the air condenses in the inlet, it may freeze up. you will notice this trough decreasing power, after some time the engine will even stop running. if you wait a while, the engine heat warms up the ice chunk, it melts, and you can start again.
quite annoying if you have to be somewhere on a given time....
It's generally only a problem if you have removed the hot-air pipe which runs from around the exhaust manifold to feed the carb warm air when the weather is cold.
It sounds like both your radiator and your thermostat are shot...the temperature ought to rise quickly to the middle (thermostat), and stay there (radiator). Definitely get the t-stat done, as it's only a cheap one. The radiator is nearer £100 new, but that can probably wait until summer before it'll give you much trouble.

After seven years of driving 340s, the only winter-related problem I've had came two years ago. The front door locks froze and I had to climb in through the hatch. Get that WD40 into your locks now!
As I often say to people, it's cold in Sweden. Fortunately, no-one has yet come back to me with 'but the 340 isn't Swedish'...
I read on car surveys or somethings that the doors are prone to falling of 340's i was like WTF
so i sprayed them with WD40 ages ago will give them another squirt.
Will wait for the winter to fuck off then will do the rad, iv found 2nd hand ones for lik £30 from scrappies.
But then again how long will they last!
i like it when the temp stays below half way mark gives me a sense of security that it isnt going to overheat. It does occasionally go to half temp i started getting scared lol. Only if i was stuck in traffic for like 40minutes then it will overheat. But im never stuck in traffic so im ok.
Doors fall off?! I think someone got the wrong end of the stick! The front doors are fairly heavy (because of the side-impact beams), so they eat their way through hinge-pins relatively quickly...but...nothing compared to modern cars. I've heard Vectras need them doing every 30-40k!
You can probably get a new one for £30 if you try hard enough - a scrappy ought to ask a tenner. You can check the condition by filling it with water and checking for leaks, and seeing how secure the fins are - on mine, half the fins just fell out!
Check ebay out - I got a 360 rad (same as the 340 minus the fan switch hole from what I can gather) for £10. It was brand new, just a guy getting rid of some old stock.

What they said! Don't bother with a s/h rad, GSF do them for around £40-50, ebay often has them etc etc! Cooling to engine is a good thing, don't muck around with it for a tank of fuel
talking about ebay i saw a set of tasty front grill foglights, i was interested in, but my ebay account has been suspended! should be up and running soon.
How common are these foglights to get hold off btw?
They on there now?? Couldn't see any, and erm.... rare as normally, but sometimes they come up (like 3 or four in the last month, then the only one I know of was one I sold to Pete, before I got mine about 3 years ago)
Well Carb Freezing........ hmmmmm..... what to say what to say!!
The only way to stop carb freezing on my car was to create a box that enclosed most of the pancake style filter to allow me to keep a hot air feed!!! Since i did this i no longer have problems, and there is obvious improvements when the weather is colder but the trick with a carbed car is to no go too cold. My ambient temp gauge was reading -4 this morn when i went to the car and she was fine no matter what abuse i gave her!!
Below is a pic of my setup now!!!
Cheers Adam
Forgot to add i used the standard plastic mount from the 340 to allow the cold and hot air feeds, this also contains a thermostat which opens and closes a flap!! In the summer you can take the flap out with no troubles!!
