Heated mirrors.

Post by 340GLT »

Well another winter weather related post!!! Basically my leccy mirrors have never been wired into make them heated so i decided to do that tonight. However i was talking to my uncle and he swears when he used to fit them they had their own switch wheras in the green Volvo book they are simply wired into the rear window demister switch.
My uncle didnt like this idea and made a far point. The 240 heated mirrors tend to get left on and then they eventually crack the glass!! So he said you need to be able to switch them off, because they clear much faster than the window does.
So i used a 400 switch behind the leccy window switches to allow me to turn them off. I took the live feed from the rear window demister so i couldnt turn them on by accident!!
I got to test them earlier and must admit i was supprised in how well they work!!
Just wondering who else has them wired in and how they are wired?
Cheers Adam

The heating switches off automaticly after about 20 sec. At least they do in my car. I mounted the mirrors myself, but they are the original ones.
Leather, leccy windows and mirrors, snowcap, foglights, open air filter, black roof upholstery. What more do you want? >a 2.3 turbo!

That's an interesting one Adam. My cars have been 1989 spec GLT's, so the mirrors were already wired in, however in my latest car, the rear window heating doesn't work, I've yet to sort that out, but the icon on the dash cluster doesn't light up, so I was interested to see if the heated mirrors still worked the other night, which they appeared to work! They are useful to have, but them switching off after 20 seconds is even more interesting. As when the car had misted up again, and the mirrors were clean, it did seem inefficient and more likely to wear the element etc out. Nice idea to switch them seperately though.

My heated mirror works pretty fast. It's wired through the rear window deminster. I have to switch it off myself, otherwise it stays on.

Switching off after 20secs sounds a bit too early. The heated mirrors on the 760 and the 960 are on the rear window demist switch and a re timed at 6 minutes for the mirrors and 12 minutes for the rear screen.

Not being funny but i cant see how the 300 ones are timed!!! sm14 Unless the timer is inside the mirror housing as there is no other way of doing it looking at the wiring diagram!!!

I've never heard of the timed bit, but stardard wiring was to have a 6" extension lead, that goes between the plug for the rear window demist, and the switch, that acted as a pass through for the rear window, and tapped off power to the two mirrors. I've often wondered if mine work though, sure I havn't noticed anything for a long time (or maybe, for ever, I'll check tomorrow)

I really need to get my rear demister fixed, as I definitely noticed not having heated mirrors yesterday! I had the feeling mine never worked on my original car, but they did work and worked extremely well indeed! So..... really need some time, some daylight, and some warmth would be a bonus to sort the rear screen!

hi guys

Ive got leccy mirrors on my J reg 340 - although only one works as I think the switch in the panel is broken. Did volvo make two types of leccy mirrors ie electric motors for the glass and a second type that have motors and also are heated? I havent noticed mine being heater during these last frosty days?

thanks

Shimon

If you find the multiplug under dash from the door, there should be a spade coming from the leccy mirrors . If not pop the door card off and check there its a brown cable with a spade on the end!!

Pete, I'm sure you'll check it early on, but check the plug that conects the glass to the car. It came loose on ours and stopped the screen working.

Cheers chap, I've given that a wriggle and looked at it as my first port of call, looks to all be attached, but the wires from the roof to the hatch are covered in black tape, as though some bodging has gone one, they get a fair bit of flex at that point!

Hope that fixes it :) They came loose on ours even though it's the saloon; the hatches get a lot more flexing
