Yeah, I could get it off my 1.7 as I don't drive it, but I'm just worried another second hand one will kink again, so thinking of a new/nearly new. I might measure it and see if any new volvos are similar length

Maybe little off topic but:
The position "3" doesn't work in my heater's controller. Any idea what's wrong?

Cos last time I had the dash out it had a big 90deg bend in it. I straighten it, almost as a joke, but it worked. Lasted for a good 6 weeks

Well... the fuse seems to be ok, but it's a little loose...
Could you tell me exactly where the relay is supposed to be?

I'm a little sm87 confused, because I know nothing about car electronics.

With the first systems (untill 85), there is also a little metallic box near the fan, where the elements could rust easily. Then it's the first and second speed that won't work. I have no idea if there is that box for the post '85 systems.

Well. Checked the fuse and the relay... didn't help.
So what should I do next?

RE: Kinked Control Cable

Went to Volvo today (Kings, Isle of Wight) and the spares guy was well helpful, has a cool program that has exploded diagrams of everthing, and is getting me a new cable £2.80 ish (can't quite remember!!) So not worth pulling my B172 apart for.

The centre console bulbs were a bit of a design fault, as sometimes it's not so much the bulb failing, as connections, and how well it is held in place. On my current GLT the centre console lighting is bump, switch and fist operated. It had never worked when I bought it, and I got used to it that way, not being bothered about changing a blown bulb, as I presumed, until I went over a bump one night and it came on! But then went off again a day or so later. It's on and off like as and when it pleases now, bumps, turn the fan on, slide a heater control, or tap it, so it's obviously a loose or bad connection on the bulb or wiring. One day I will sort it out!

My other red GLT (not currently on the road) doesn't have centre console lighting, but that may be a blown bulb. I would've hoped it was easier to replace!

Moving onto a slightly different part of the dash board lighting, the headlight switch dial has never been illuminated in my car, so after some fiddling and bulb replacement, it worked again, so it was a blown bulb. However what seemed odd to me, was that it was only illuminated when the lights were switched on (obviously) but with the ignition, surely, it would be more useful to have the dial illuminated when the ignition was off, to prevent you leaving your lights switched on when parking, as that part of the dash would be more visible when leaving the car!?!? I have only ever left the lights on once, in a hurry one morning parking at work, however it seems a little odd that it is wired this way to switch the dial illumination off. I know Will (wpj01908) has wired a a small device in which makes the chime or buzzer noise should you leave the lights on and open the door, which is a nice touch to overcome the possible problem. My Fiat never allowed the lights to be left on unless you turned the key backwards and pressed a button for parking lights, a nice touch on the tin can!

That program with the exploded diagrams is called VADIS (Vehicle Autorised Dealer Information System or something like that)....its half of the automated fault diagnostic system that the newer cars have. You can buy old copies on that there auction side...sub £50....WELL worth it. It has its faults, but it's the best we have.

I suppose the headlight switch lights up to allow you to find it in the dark!

The famous thing to check for the fan is the thermal cut-out device, which is located INSIDE the airbox, near the blower motor. It may only fail to work on the third speed because of the additional current (and therefore additional heat) involved. Beyond that...trace back with a multimeter where the voltage stops!

cheers

the centre console does look nice all lit up - i think the reason the h'l switch wasnt left on full time is cos it would drain the battery :P
