Good news! Hope for Nessy...
I had this "sounds like wheel slip" noise during rushed gearchanges ( usually 1st to 2nd ) in my 1983 340.... you guys think this is prop slip? I thought at the time it was wheel spin but thats unlikely in a straight line in a 1.4 so maybe its prop slip... or dya think that noise is the clutch...?

Mine still did it the day I had a new clutch put in, by a reputable place, after I had the old clutch adjusted as much as poss, which is why I have put it down to prop slip.

a small squeak is the prop slip. NOT clutch slip. happens during rushed gear changes, might eventually happen whenever you put the foot down (that was the case with nessy when i origionally swapped the prop). can do 20k with it squeaking.. in nessy's case it happens from the rear of the car (i think)..
clutch slip doesnt make any noise. otherwise the car would be wailing whenver you set off (even gently)..

Well it could be clutch slip...the clutch on Dad's 940 needs doing, and that makes a noise like Nessy. I must admit I didn't even think that this could be the prop (and looking at the construction of the thing, I'm not too sure exactly how it's possible without the thing tearing itself apart the first time it slips), but I'll definitely be looking into it.

basically the ends are just metal, with a layer of rubber, then slotted into a metal tube which is then crimped on. the rubber is able to slip round inside the metal, because there are no teeth etc to stop it..

if the rubber slips once its a goner.
it is supposed to be "vulcanised" to the inside of the tube, and the outside of the centre piece (with the teething in it)
the thinnest part of the rubber is to be found in the middle between the inside and outside vulcanised surfaces. Often, you can see some hair cracks in the rubber there. if this gets more severe it is wise to change the entire propshaft.
As the vulcanising procedure is quite special, and new rubbers nowhere to be found.. changing the entire thing also is the _only_ option....
concl; I'm almost convinced it isn't that.
greetings Wouter

Ah I see...of course...I couldn't quite work out how it could be slipping where it's bolted on on the splined section! Although I'm sure someone mentioned the splines on the bellhousing being knackered...?
