alternator lifetime

Post by bogbasic »

Could someone give me a rough idea of how long the factory fitted alternator lasts on the 360? Is it in the region of 100-150k or less?? Thanks, bogbasic.

Pass...I think it very much depends on how the car has been used. Mine is still on the original at 138k.

cheers

how it has been used, can make a difference but hardly ever does.

factors seriously diminishing the lifetime of an alternator are:

- getting wet frequently, especially in combination with road / sea salt

- overloading (shorted battery,wiring)

- underloading (engine running without the battery being connected properly)

- welding on the bodywork without the battery removed

the last 3 factors may even lead to instant failure, even at 0 miles wear and tear.

If you're lucky an alternator can last 'forever'
