I managed to snap off the end of the bolt that secures the lid of the air filter housing to the main part. I think this bolt is integral to the housing itself, so I probably need to replace the whole thing. This air filter housing is secured by three small bolts to the carburettor and one large bolt to an external bracket (as seen in Haynes 0715, Section 3.7, Fig.3.5).
have you snapped the bolt that is in the middle of the lid on top?
If so... I had trouble with one of these before...
if you remove the air filter from the car and then turn it over... this thread that you put the nut on.... in the underside of the filter there is a recess... in there is a square based plug which has the thread on the other side...
in my 340 this plug kept dropping down making the bolt difficult to do up...
is this the bolt which is missing / damaged on yours?
I think that bolt just hold the lit on... but it is also clamped on by the clips all round the edge... As the square base of my bolt didnt fit properly the bolt kept dropping. I had to hold it in from underneath and then tighten the bolt from the top.... I dont think this bolt is essential..just as long as the hole is covered as this may allow dirt to get into the airfilter. You might be able to get a normal bolt as a replacement - insert from underneath... not sure how to make it stay in though......you could insert the bolt and then cover the hole underneath with a small piece of tape.. this will stop the bolt falling out as you turn the filter the right way up...
with the filter then bolted onto the carb, you can then reach underneath, remove the tape and keep the bolt in place with your finger.. then do up a nut on the top side as normal... might be a bit annoying but should work...
not sure if ive explained it here well....
all the best

PS have you tried the Daf club in holland form advice about breaker points and ignition parts?
You should really replace that bolt cos it secures the air filter properly and helps to prevent air leaks round the side.
Its not that easy to do but it isn't that difficult either. You need to take the assembly off the car and onto a bench, then punch out the bolt. It will be difficult but should come out eventually. Then you can stuff in a bolt of your choice and replace. Bung a bit of mastick or something up there once the bolts in though, helps to stop it dropping out.
