oh yeah - forgot to mention that. it fell off a few times in the past - think i taped it on at some point. if it fails to start i'd check there first..
(distant memories of doing a bumpstart on the m4, having pulled over because a spark plug came out and started bouncing off the bonnet..)

I cut the spade connector off, trimmed back an inch of insulation, and wrapped the conductors round the stub of the pin. It's been working ever since. Ghetto bodging for teh win!
The starter tends to stick a bit, so I think I'll just get hold of a decent one when I get chance and fix both problems in one.
