Stupid question

I've noticed that there are a lot off english people in this forum. My english is not bad, but it can laways be better. Would you english guys please tell me if I spell something wrong or if the sentence construction isn't ok? I'm planing to go on an internship in australia, so the better my english is, the more points I score.

A slight edit of your first post with a few corrections, not perfect but a little better

Japper you have nothing to worry about .

I always find it amazing how well many "foriegn" people speak or write in English .

Your English is so much better than my Dutch

( in fact dekay would probably say your English is better than my English

)

I think that the English are generally very lazy ,not only with their own language but also learning other languages .they seem to expect all nationalities to be able to speak English.

That is probably because English is sort of the number 1 global language. Only Dutch people and one half of Belgium speaks Dutch. We have to learn all the languages to keep up.

The English are the worst linguists in the world - something to do with us once having had an empire I suspect. Embarassing at times isn't it. !!

but our empire didnt include Europe ,

mind you I can speak a bit of Gujurati, Hindi and Urdu

about the same as my French , Spanish and German ,

In my youth as long as you could speak enough of the local language to get a beer and a s"*g you were sorted lol

Most foreign people think the dutch are good linguistics, I personally disagree with that. There are just a few people I know who speak fluent English, most of them just stutter around. We do have the advantage of a very complicated spelling (I don't know what spelling is in English, maybe it is spelling? I mean the way words have to be written in for example past tense or present simple.) system, therefor other languages as English are comparetively easy to learn.

A Dutch friend once told me that there was a meeting in New Amsterdam (Later New York) about what the official language for the colony should be. Senior officials sat down and voted on whether they should choose english or dutch, and English won by one vote. He reckoned this lead to the entire USA being english speaking rather than Dutch! I don't know how accurate this is, but it makes a good story...

it's accurate, quite funny from our retrospect view

PS holland and belgium are not the only places where dutch is spoken,
there are also Suriname and Netherlands Antilles with a considerable amount of dutch-speaking people.

Also, Dutch and Afrikaans-speaking people (South Africa) can understand each other quite good, because Afrikaans has its roots in Dutch.

PS did you know Eald Englisc is very much alike to old dutch, especially in its pronunciation?
