That sounds like there has been bit air left to cooling system when you did change radiator? That can make temp gauge to act like that.

Yeah, I always thought just short of vertical was the normal operating temp. With clutch disengaged, a bit of choke is required before the temp needle gets up there to keep the revs at a happy tick over.

As Chris mentioned before, the choke is infact a very sophisticated anti-theft device, in that chavs can't operate it

I bought a genuine Volvo one, but it didn't come from Volvo! I think it was £85-90 from Heanor Radiators last summer. Blackstone are the OE - ask for it by name

Nissens are also good - very common for 700s.
