Drifting .........Diff Welding / suspension
Yeah thats probably the best, or you could put the old oil back in, run it round for a few days, then drain it again and fill it with new oil so that you give any bits chance to come out with the old oil. I think everyone thats welded the diffs on their 300s have done it on the car though as its probably a pain getting the diff and gearbox apart!

Carefull sliding around on an open diff, i did this to mine in under 10,000ks of owning the car, which has 170,000ks on it now.

Arrow pointing to a gap inbetween the pinion shaft and gear which i beleive at one point would have had a bearing in it, now there is 20 odd mm of freeplay.

Telltale signs of the diff going, was a fair bit of lash when getting on and off the throttle, and the diff started to act like a locked diff as the pinions jammed themselves against the other gears and locked up, was good fun till all the teeth smashed off and punched their way out the bottom of the diff, the first photo should give you a slightly better idea of the space you have to try and get your mig into, i put mine in there whilst i had the diff sitting on the bench, and whilst it fitted, i couldn't move it around much and could barely see what i would be welding, so i have left it alone for now, but i am considering welding this broken diff up soon, at the moment my wife is using the car as a daily driver so i don't want to do it just yet.
It won't be easy to get it looking like the sierra diff is, i'll try get a better picture tomorrow if you want, i still have the old diff leaning against the side of the garage.

That's amazingly bust. I was thinking of cutting a small square piece of steel to use as filler in the center, reducing the amount of welding. Maybe I'd be better off welding it MMA style, so I won't struggle to get the MIG torch in. But then i'd have the problems of excess spatter as discussed earlier in the topic. I'd be interested in seeing pictures of one that had been successfully done.
