windscreen wipers and odd buzz

Post by bogbasic »

Folks, I get an odd buzzing sound from under the dashboard when the windscreen wipers are on. The buzzing builds up before each stroke of the wipers! Is it likely to be the relay in the fusebox or something else? Cheers, bogbasic.

My 360 does something similar....I think it may well be the mechanism rubbing on something. I should probably fix it :)

cheers

hi guys!

Sorry for the absense!

this is part of a post I was going to write about 340s jobs since being away.

This is one of the probs my 340 had recently.

I've noticed that ever since I got the car, whenever the ignition is first switched on, there was a few random clicks or buzz buzz from behind the instrument panel.

I ignored it until... the wipers jammed on!!! even in the off postion they were going. Switching up to intermittant then down to off position sometimes solved the problem but after to cured itself the problem came back with a vengence a few weeks ago. the wipers were then all the time!!! The only function of the wiper stalk that worked was the higher speed setting.

I ended up pulling the fuse ( I think its number 8 ) to stop the wipers.

Further investigation ( with my friend who owns a volvo specialist garage - who by the way worked for volvo when the 66 and 340 CVT were new so if anyone wants specialist help or servicing - he is happy to help. He has already worked on my dads 66 ) suggested the switch was at fault so I purchased some from ebay.

Changing the switch allowed me to identify the three relays behind the instrument panel. Pics to follow, one is for the indicators, one for the wipers ( intermittent setting ) and the third seems to click when the ignition is switched on. This is in addition to the one in the fuse box. Anyone know what this is?

So the wiper stalk was changed, fuse reinserted and .... all ok !!!!

wipers work as normal.....

so me being me, put the old switch back on to be sure that was the problem.

and..... all the same!! wipers working normally and switch all ok!!

how odd? loose connector on the wiper stalk?

any ideas guys? so it wasnt the switch unit itself!

As part of this work was also to sort my temperamental indicator lights. More on that later!

the wiper problem started first and a few weeks later the indicators didnt flash anymore, they just switched on when you moved the stalk in the appropriate direction. This was followed by them not working at all.

Contacting my same friend, I changed the indicator relay behind the instrument panel. Incidently, this is the same indicator relay used in the 240, 740 and 940. Well done Volvo!!! It is a standard 2 (4) x 21W 12V unit ( it can power 4 21W bulbs max )

swaping the relay solved the problems. The initial thought was that the feed current to the switching section of the relay wasnt high enough, hence the lack of switching or a lack of anything happening at all.......

however, 200m out from my friends garage and the indicators go back to their usual tricks.

so the orig relay was put back in. I was thinking the contact was poor between the switch supply line and the relay itself. Incidently, these relays have only three legs - one for switching supply, one for the higher current line live and one earth.

So the orig relay reinserted and things all worked.

so no new parts needed at all....

are case of poor connections maybe???

or maybe me being trained by my trusty 340 for my future plans of getting a 480 :)

look forward to hearing you guys comments...

PS... the 340 roof chopping event, is that car now going to be kept as a cabrio?? nice project!!!

hope to see you all soon
