State of Varts old box,

Box totally stripped - most parts cleaned. Gearsets all seem fine but bearings would need replacing. I think the synchro rings could be recovered by 'lapping' but would be best replaced. The diff is a 3.64 and has wear. the casing was scrap (and part of it is now my gasket sizing jig)
C/W, pinion, and diff parts all lying on the bench.

Apart from the scrap diff case (which I have claimed) they're 'Varts Parts' to do with as he wishes. ( I am merely the current custodian of of our heritage) An old g/box is not really 'National Trust' material though.

Talk to Vart and I will 'take instructions'

its surplus. free to take away. it can be made available in suffolk or portsmouth area. anything you want off it mac is yours first but otherwise i'll collect it. if your about this weekend i'll be visiting suffolkshire and can take it off your hands if you'd like. otherwise its up to sven to retrieve it from whereever it is easiest.

see if this suits you

I like the Free bit 8)

The gears didn't matter-I think I have a plan for them

M45 box was fitted to 240 was it not if so I think we're on a roll-if it was fitted to 240 bearings/synchro rings should still be available???

Not really bothered about C/wheel but I'll have a think about the pinion :?

It may be of use.

Question for Mac- no reason why M45 box shouldn't mate to any 360 diff housing? Or are m45's only compatible with early diffs?

Thanks for listening

M45s are the same as M46s and M47s as far as the rear of the 4-speed casing section. 3.82 diffs ought to be easy-ish to find in decent shape. Ghetto spec 240s did indeed get M45s, but it's not (quite) the same box as in a 300....needs some bolt-ons changing. No biggie.

I'm curious to know why you're looking for a 45 specifically....and I'm going to shoot a guess at it being because (AFAIK) they all had the (allegedly) stronger iron case. Other than that and subtly different ratios....there's not much in it! I'm keeping my M45R as a 'core' for a 'stronger' box for the turbo car.

we can get a straight cut gear kit with tip top ratios for a 4 speed
hopefully we can graft a 5th gear on the back for "normal" motorway driving but all other gears s/c. if not it'll be noisey going down the motorway in 4th  the box we have at the minute is a direct top 5th and the noise is so LOUD we need headdsets to talk to eachother ,otherwise you end up shouting your head off.
all ifs and buts at the minute though, but time will tell..........

You could drop those gears directly into an M47, and leave the stock 5th OD ratio, by the sounds of things.

The problem with straight-cut gears is the noise levels....

While it makes the cars fantastic to listen to, it's not good for PR....

(mini with a highly tuned a-series and straight cut box anyone? mmmm)

Mr Nick, please remove your sensible head-life isn't a rehearsal-I'm gettin as much enjoyment rammed in before I shuffle off

Twin carbs gone, slicks, multiple lights etc-where's it goin' to end-everyone potter around in C5's watching the battery condition light sm38

Anyhows I'll wait until the supplier confirms details and the," fabulous Mr Mac" can confirm gear kit from 240 M45 can be transplanted into 360 M45R 8)

Ps is Carl still MIA

sorry! I live in the south east where we have to keep worrying about these things! Welsh rallying seems much more fun, the people there love watching so they don't have to worry so much, and can get away with straight-cut boxes and twin 40's...

I'm back in action!!

Pick up of new engine parts is arranged. Plus I now have a bigger garage to work in. Will this mean Fioner finally gets the revamp she so desperately needs? And will they let me back out onto the lanes in 2007? Only time will tell.
