Yeah Nick, they are welded to the pillars. The rear doors are easy, three bolts on each hinge. Job done, adjustment too, front doors, stupid access to the pins, risk of damaging something too on the paintwork!
So yes, your conclusion seems about right!

I honestly dont think there's anything wrong with the draper tool - it's basically a bar of metal, nothing high tech there - the reason it doesn't work on our cars (I bought one and tried it) is because the size of the nuts which screw onto the removal pin. These are either too big, and snag on the hinge barrel - or slightly too small, and burrow into the hollow hinge pin, spreading it and jamming it completely solid.
The thing to do is find out the exact diameter of the pin and nut required, by asking Mac basically - this is the business end of the pin removal tool and are available as consumable items. It doesn't really matter what you attach this too as long as it's solid.
In the past I've removed a door in order to swap a front wing on a 360 - and used a drift which worked well (actually, drift is rather too posh a word - it was a screwdriver with the end snapped off). I tried this again but quickly realised it has to be exactly the right diameter to work. I was just lucky last time.
