Dodgy heater controls??

Post by griffo20022 »

Hey guys, noticed today when I was fiddling with the heater setting sliders.

the heater position slider (windows, feet, head on etc) doesn't go all the way to the right, it won't go exactly on the windows setting. when you try to push it over as far theres a lot of retaliation on it and will just spring back to the setting before, don't wanna force it too hard then break something!

Also with the temperature slider it will sit in the very left end of the panel (cold) then when you slide it across it wont sit still in a position between the very left and half way but will go all the way to the very right.

Is this just how they are? Or is it a fault and if so has anybody encountered it before?

Also just as a quicky my 2 centre vents always blow cold and the 2 outer vents always blow warm. Think my dads Merc is the same, is this how they're supposed to be??

Thanks guys :)

The first problem is a bent cable I'm afraid. Good news, cable is £2.81 from Volvo, even though they'll have to order it from Sweden. Bad news, it's a pain in the backside to fit. You need to have the stereo out, and then the bit the stereo slots into out, then a metal sheet above that out, then you need to fight the slder panel out, and apart so you can get the new cable in. Then you need to fit the new cable without bending it. Took me 2 goes and 2 cables.... Basically, the cable kinks, which is what your current one has done.

The other end of the cable is much more friendly remove carpet panel from passenger side of the prop tunnel, and you'll see the flappy thing if you look quite high up, undo screw, fit cable.

Tbh, the temp one sounds the same, a kinked cable. Do this the same time as the position cable (they are in the same panel) but feed through the bulkhead, and remove the airblower box (2 screws and a nut) to get the the "tap" on the heater matrix which is under the blower box.

Other than that, the centre 2 vents are supposed to always blow cold, thats so you can keep warm and awake, and I think the outsides only blow hot cos your temp cable is kinked too, and the heater matrix tap is stuck open!!!

I've really missed the two centre vents blowing cold, as it doesn't do that in the 940... :(

awwwww maaaaan why does it have to be something thats bloody awkward lol!

Oh well, it's not a major problem so other things will come before hand. At least I know that it isn't supposed to be like that and I know what it is now :)

It's not that bad to do tbh, just I expected it to be a 5min job, where as it's generally an hour or two with a small amount of swearing ;) Just think, theres no bolts to be rusted up!

Messing with the heater controls is the one thing on a 300s which still makes me feel slightly unwell. I'm sure I'll have a positive experience sooner or later, but it generally includes lots of swearing, broken clips, and grumpyness.

cheers

The centre vents blowing cold at all times is one thing I do like about the 3 - its a shame the 240 does not do the same.

I've not found the heater cable to be much trouble but it did take me some time to get my botched heater valve to work correctly with the cable.
