340 1.4L carb problems

I just bought a 1990 1.4 L 340 gl and it has a stalling problem. It starts fine and doesn't stall while the throttle is down but does when you come to a stop or start again. It's not a choke problem as it does this even when completely warm. I think it must be a carb problem so I found a new carb for a 1.7 L. Does anyone know if this will fit the 1.4 L? I ordered a hanes manual, which would tell me, but it hasn't arrived yet.

I have had the same trouble twice now, never really found the problem but taking the carb off the car and washing it down in petrol seemed to do the trick. Think its just a tiny idle jet blocked sumwhere but never found it. I found the cause of it was running to low on petrol and pulling dirt through from the tank. No idea about the 1.7 carb im afraid,
