^^
I hope you're right Pete

Tom,
sorry this has taken longer than I thought, but that's normal for me. Anyway,

Image

This is the stuff I pulled out yesterday. Washer reservoir, two light wiper motors, piping from reservoir to light wipers, piping from reservoir to rear of car including the insert which pokes through the rear glass. (Orange cable is unrelated )

Closeups:

Image

Reservoir has two pumps, which are wired into the main loom along the chassis leg thusly:

Motors have plug fittings, which may or may not be on your car:

Rear hose routing is a tricky one.
into the bulkhead:

Up the A pillar:

Hidden behind a panel and into the headlining:

Got to take off the sunvisor to get to it:

Headlining is easy to peek under:

Remove rear seatbelt and trim panel:

Bad picture, it goes into the oval on the top left, and out of the circle in the bottom right:

Drill a hole in your glass I dare you

Motors screw into the headlamps:

These for your bumper:

Ok that kind of turned into an instuctional article
As for the rear wiper motor, I didn't want to start chopping wires before I got some clarification on here. There seems to be a lot of wires for one little motor:

How's that? Sorry the pictures are a bit rubbish, just a mobile phone cam and dim lighting in the unit.

John, what a detailed post, wow! Thank you for going to so much trouble. The pics are really useful, I'll check whether my loom has those wiper motor / pump connector plugs tonight ... From memory, the washer fluid reservoir is the same, mine's just missing the second pump and maybe the lid is different (no hose).

As for the wiring for the rear wiper, where does that lead to? Is it routed along the top alongside the hose as well?
Drill a hole in your glass I dare you
I dunno
Make sure the glass you choose is not tempered or safety glass. These types of glass can only be drilled with special equipment not available to ordinary craftsmen.

Thanks for your help so far!

Oh dear, Aymat warned me it wasn't going to be "plug and play". I don't think I have the plugs for the headlamp wiper motors ...

Image

... come to think of it: unless they're hidden under the air box (haven't checked that yet).

So I might need the plugs & a bit of wiring as well :-(

The wash pump for the rear window should fit in nicely, in place of that blanking stud though:

No problem mate, I had 20 minutes to burn and it was all easy. I'll have a better look at the wiring on the rear motor, maybe even chop open the tailgate to get at it, as I kinda want to know now. As for the fronts, I can pull apart the wiring and trace them back. I'd imagine you'd just need to splice into the live for the screen washwipe, and find a good earth, but someone else will know better.
Will probably be Saturday before I'm over there again, maybe get things posted next week before winter makes itself felt eh?
Cheers,
John

Right, I'm so sorry that this has taken so long, but I've been having a bit of a sh!t time of things recently and I'm struggling to motivate myself. I pulled all the wiring associated with the light wipers but I'm damned if I can explain it. Maybe someone with half a clue could help out here

It's a short while since I stripped the loom too, so it's hard to remember what's what.

left plug:
Image

right plug:
Image

each appears to have two brown earths, guessing they can be relocated to any earth point..?

from memory the red and black wires here:
Image
are from the left hand plug, and the above is them going into the coil/ignition module which looks like this:
Image

this is the plug where the wires go into the fuse box:
Image

IIRC, the 2 blacks in the top left and the 2 reds 3rd down in the middle are the ones were interested in. I've pulled it all as completely as I could so there should be enough for you to work with.

Image

As far as the rear wiper goes, the brown wire is the earth for both the motor and the 3rd brake light. The blue+white is the live for the brake light. And the blue and black wires go into the motor itself.
I'm not sure I can help any further with the wiring, but I'll try to trace the rear wiper harness back into the car before it gets crushed.

Sorry again for taking weeks over this.

I saw the detailed pictures of the rear-wiper washer-system:

I heard there were types with an extra reservoir in the rear, specially for the rear-wipper. The reservoir would fit behind the lower sidepanel...

Not sure of it all, but maybe thats a hole lot easier??

Trabitom: Why dont you try the NL? There are quite a few of these still available...Heard the set of a 440/460 would also fit by the way

That's interesting, I hadn't heard of that before. I've only ever seen the two-pump front reservoir version ...

A lot of these bits are 300-specific according to my favourite parts cross-reference website :-):

# 300 specific
rear w/w motor
headlamp w/w motor
headlamp washer arms

# non-300 specific
w/w pump (lots of models incl. 400s and many current cars)
headlamp wiper blades (Renault 5s and some rare 80's cars (Peugeot 604, Opel Manta))
rear wiper blades (lots of models)

Holland has been a great source of parts to me in the past. But postage-wise it makes no difference whether the parts are an hour's drive away in Maastricht or a day and a half's journey away in Sunderland ...

BTW pistonpen paultje, doesn't your '77 Mk1 have a fairly unique headlamp w/w system with the wiper arms coming out of the side of the radiator?

@John - thanks for taking the time to post such a detailed write-up. We'll work out a way of getting the parts over the channel, either by post, or perhaps at the Christmas meet ... I'd planned on getting the "winter volvo" out last weekend, but I forgot the key and travelled 400kms for nothing. sm38 Duh! -2°C this morning, and they're gritting the roads already ...
