340 wont start.
340 wont start.
i have a h reg 1.7 gl 340.
the problem is it wont start. as above.
it will turn over fine but as soon as any throttle of
r choke is given it sounds like it seizes for a split second i.e wont turn over... then it clears and gives an almighty bang... i do have a side exit exhaust... then it smells really badly of fuel...
i haven't changed anything recently that could have caused the problem although what i think was a vacuum pipe was loose a short while ago but that was sorted and i ran sweet for about a week.
if anyone has any ideas any help would be great as i need this to get to work and where i live there ain't many buses...lol
cheers guys.

;edit; the carbs was replaced a short while ago with a fairly new webber as the old solex was shagged.

I'm not too up on the 1.7's, is the distributor on the back of the engine by the bulkhead? I know that a 340 1.4 I've been dealing with lately had a problem which was similar, that was down to the rotor arm being the wrong one and had slipped, messing up the timing. Worth checking and as Morgan says, seeing if there is a spark.
Not entirely sure why when throttle or choke is applied is slows up, is that compression building up?
It sounds as though fuel is getting through if it's making the bang every now and then, as a 340 favourite, or carbed 360 is perished fuel lines, meaning it is sucking air not fuel. The short sections from the tank to the main lines under the boot floor and the section to the fuel pump from the main lines.

problem solved...lol.
was rotor armed all corroeded... *sp*
loose timing belt. had slipped a tooth.
all h.t leads were full of water... and f***ed up. lol
spent half hour wth it and sorted it... damn i'm good. he he.
cheers for your help guys.
if yours is 'siezing' check the timing belt see how tight it is... they can skip a tooth then its all screwed up... take the air box off... with the bonnet up turn it over and see if there's smoke comming out of the carb.
cheers again guys.

Glad to hear it is sorted, just shows how it wasn't only one thing causing the problems, a combination of a couple of things soon leads to a larger problem which can make fault finding even harder. Start from the beginning and as you solve one problem at a time it should become easier to sort it out!
