Starting to get worried about my 360 being on the drive while Ryan's 740 is worked on in the garage...
cheers

This is utterly ridiculous. Gone are the days of the 300's being unwanted and invisible it seems.
Not many of these attempted thefts seem to have been successful, thankfully. However, getting the cars moved and secure again asap has got to be your main priority, or they may be back to have another go.
Near me there has been a lot of smash and grab thefts, people after valuables etc, laptops, sat navs etc, not the actual cars, but these do seem as though they are after the cars.
I think it's definitely time to start upping the anti on the car security front. I've never been one for alarms, mainly due to them sometimes going off with false alarms at annoying times and when you're not around, thus annoying lots of people. However, I think the 340 and the 360 both deserve a motion sensing alarm system, and it would add remote central locking. I did like that function on my old 360.
In the mean time, I worry about parking any vehicle anywhere quite frankly, we know if someone is desperate enough they'll break into anything if they think there might be something worth while stealing. It's the problems and damage caused that make it so annoying. The cost for the repairs is often too much to justify claiming on insurance for how much a 300 is worth so the insurance company will write it off. Do it off your own back and it'll soon add up.
If it is nicked, then you've all the hassle of sorting another means of transport until the insurance think about giving you a few pennies that won't cover the real cost of a car.
Either way these people are scum. One of the biggest problems is no one dares to confront a possible thief, through the fear of being attacked. We've all heard on the news about the have a go heroes who have paid the price recently, all from merely trying to do the right thing and protect someone or something. Just keep an eye out and if you do see anything suspicious, see if you can stir the Police to come out and check it out, (might get someone out within 24 hours, by which time they'll be gone) imagine it is your property and how you'd like someone to do the same for you.
It's a sad state of affairs if you can't even own a Volvo 300 without it being at a high risk of theft and break in.
Gavin, it's a real shame some clown has made the decision for you about whether to keep your car or not.
I make that 4 300's either broken into or stolen within only a couple of weeks within this forum alone. Any ideas people?

Gavin ,
whats the insurance situaition with Rory before you go giving it away ,
(and sorry if this upsets Chris's or foggy's plans )
I presume you called the police and got a crime number ?
obviously dependant on whether or not you have gauranteed no claims and what your excess is but, is it not worth claiming ?
surely the cost of repairing the redline ( repair or replacement of two doors plus the gutter trim , paint , replace the redline stripe ) would be borderline to it being written off ( especially when you dial in the labour costs at £40.00 + vat) so they may well agree to pay you out and let you keep the car that way every one ( except rory ) is a winner.
we have all seen a rather dramatic increase in the 300's value and its scrap value alone must be £80.00 / £100.00
( they are heavy old buggers afterall )
if the insurance under values your car use the recent ebay sales as argument .
worth thinking about
p.s check out the bargain thread
and no thats not my ebay name
Carl .
you say your car was left outside ,
was the car at a garage ?
if so surely you have a claim against them for negligence for not protecting it .
if you entrust a vehicle to a garage surely they have a duty of care ,
while it is with them ,not to allow it to be damaged and it should be stored securely either inside the workshop or at least in a compound while they have it .
remember even if its a friends garage , they can claim off of there insurance so the money isn't coming out of there pocket.
if the owner of the garage that looks after any of my famolies cars ever left one of them outside overnight I would kill him and he knows it .
Oh ,and yes I have driven past after opening hours before now to make sure my cars safely inside

Carl: No way, that really sucks. I'm sorry dude.
Mick: The Redline was starting to look expensive (new carb, exhaust, crossmembers (?), quite a bit of rust, etc.). It's insured for £350 and I have nine years of unprotected no-claims bonus. Even if the insurance coughed up for the damaged doors and panels, I'd still have to find a whole wedge of dosh to sort the other stuff out. And anyhow, I've been hanging my nose over my mate's 940 for years
I will miss owning a 340, but as we know they do not have the same standard of rustproofing as the Swedish Volvos. My cars have to live on the road and they always end up getting rusty. The Redline was quite nice when I bought it two years ago as it had been garaged. However, it's a lot worse for wear now. It would be a shame to buy one of these very nice 300s that seem to pop up from time to time, only to let it rot away outside my house.

It's my Dad's garage Mick. Normally they put it back in every night, but it had ran out of petrol and they hadn't had chance to go and get some. As it was a week night they left it out as that's normally fine, but as always my luck strikes again. Partly my own fault for leaving it there so long in their way, but nevermind.
Claiming on the insurance will probably result in it getting written off, and possibly affecting Dads policy so it's not worth the hassle for a car worth so little. And I'm not sure what the damage is like yet anyway, Dad said it wasn't too severe. If worse comes to worse I can get a replacement door and he'll get someone to sort it out.

fair do's Gavin but the point is they wouldent repair it ,
its not cost effective because of labour costs so they would have written it off ,
If you had protected no claims and low excess it would have been worth a claim , at the end of the day it was still mot'd and taxed on the day the damage was done so they would have no choice but to accept the claim.
then when they offer you a low price you start throwing ads for comparable cars with higher prices at them and they usually up the payout .
I had a granada 2.9 ghia and they offerred me £350 when it was stolen and burnt out ,
I sent them a load of ads for higher priced granadas from autotrader and the like and they ended up by paying me £1,000.
God knows how many people would have accepted the first offer but thats how insurance companies make there money.

I've been through this process too, and it does work. Basically they'll try it on in their initial offer and it's down to the punter to show them the error of their ways...redline wrote:when they offer you a low price you start throwing ads for comparable cars with higher prices at them and they usually up the payout
