Hello!

Post by gltux »

Hello,
I've been lurking for a while but I've finally got the ownership stuff sorted out for my car so I can join in now.

I got this 360 GLT last September. It had been parked for at least a year so it's in a right state, grime, leaves, general dereliction, etc. There's a lot of rust on the drivers door and the bit at the front that the bonnet joins on to.

The major problem though, is that the cambelt snapped when I tried to drive it home from it's previous resting place. It wasn't moving or even in gear and there were no nasty noises, it just stopped like it had been switched off, so is it possible that I've got away with it and the valves are fine? It ran well before it went ping so it'd be a shame if it was screwed.

Yes, I didn't know that's what it's called but it sounds about right.

Kaos, thanks for the offer. Me and a friend are going to try and finish replacing the cam belt tomorrow and after that I'm not sure what I'll do next. We might not finish it so you could come and help me saturday if you want, or point out all the things we've done wrong ;-)

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but the main difficulty with replacing a snapped timing belt is correctly timing the engine.

Set the crank so the marks on the pulley are pointing straight up.
Set the aux shaft so the mark on the pulley is at 3 o'clock as you look at it from the front. There's a matching mark on the inside of the cover.
Set the cam so the mark is just anti-clockwise of 12 o'clock. This is one you definitely want to set against the mark on the inside of the cover.

Restrain the tensioner by putting a nail or drill bit (or similar) through the hole in the spring-rod. Aaaand I think I'm about out of tips. Oh...if there's any sign of oil leakage, you might want to replace the three shaft seals, and the gasket sealing the backing plate for the lower two.

cheers

Jeff, was it on a driveway in Porlock road (or Park road, never know which one it is) cause I did leave it there for months before my friend towed it up here for me.

Kaos, sure thing

James, don't worry, I haven't got much intelligence to insult ;-). Sometimes I do need bloody obvious things stated to me or I miss something stupid.

We finished it yesterday and it goes! There was a bit of a tense moment when it turned over and didn't start but that was because I hadn't plugged the ignition block thing in properly,

Now I have the daunting problem of the rust...
