hey guys,
i saw earlier in my 360gle that one of the dashboard lights is on... its the one with 2 vertical lines and some diagonal thing with a circle in the middle.
can anyone tell me what the light means?
thanks
unknow dashboard light
hi there
the choke is a restriction in the air intake which results in an enrichment of the air fuel ratio(more fuel relative to air). At sufficient restriction a mechanism of sorts will also open the throttle a little (ie the total volume of the air mix is increase to increase engine revs and avoid the cold engine stalling).
choke is used when the engine is cold to assist starting. If you have never driven or started a car with a manual choke there is a nack to learn but basically start with full choke to get the engine started then as soon as it does, move the choke inwards to drop the revs but keep the engine running smoothly - prob 1000 to 1500 rpm. As the engine warms up, the choke can be moved in. Either by trying to put the choke in and hearing the engine stumble a little ie you have pushed it in too far or by the fact the car will feel sluggish and struggle as you accelerate ie air fuel mix is too fuel rich.
if the car starts without choke and the engine is cold then this suggests the air fuel mix is currently set too rich (ie the choke enrichment is being done without needing the choke) which most likely means the car will run rich when warm also. Or, the choke cable is jammed and permanently open a bit. This will also make the car run rich when warm as above. Sometimes the light doesnt come on until the choke has moved quite a way.
each car is a little different but you'll get the hang of it.
It's becoming a proper thing of the past a manual choke with anyone who learnt to drive in the 90s (in a fuel injected car) having no idea how to use them. fuel injected doesnt its own cold start enrichment (although some 740s have auto chokes)
my wife learn to drive a year ago and has never driven a car with a choke. but, she's learning to start older volvos now too!!!

Enjoy your 300s
If choke light is lit all time, it can be because of choke cable is badly adjusted or worn / loose.
My choke cable is bent, snapped and missing perhaps some clip, it is impossible to push choke so much in that light would go off, also recently (in storage) it has developed habit of getting stuck to random positions, so I need to adjust choke from engine bay which is rather inconvient if it would be freezing and raining water that frozes to ice when it contacts any surface.
So I would need a new one
But switch for choke is located in steering column, when you pull choke out you see a nut that attachs cable to steering column and there is also switch, it is just on other side of nut so you can't see it here, you need to remove nut, remove knob from cable, push cable in and extrat it from under side of streering column.
Maybe possible to understand? Sorry from my english, I know there should be some more words, I think

thanks guys! You've all been really helpful!!!
Just one more quick question...
i was driving home from work, and i think i had the choke out about half maybe, anyhows i got halfway round a roundabout and then stalled. The car wouldnt start for ages either with the choke in or out. I finally get it started with the choke quite far out but cant go any higher than second gear as it feels like its gonna cut out. When i pushed the choke in, everything was fine again! Could i have made the mixture too rich and stopped it from turning over prioperly?
Thanks!!

Could be that your spark plugs were 'flooded' with fuel and then they are not able to ignite fuel, in such situation push choke off and very gently floor the throttle, keep throttle floored when starting, this causes lot of air to pass trough cylinders and extra fuel should clear.speedydan wrote:thanks guys! However sometimes (when really badly flooded) it is required to remove spark plugs and clean + dry them.
