The tdc pickup holes can be carefully filed out to alow the sensor to be moved back or forward with a corresponding change in ignition timing. This is a trick we used on the renault 5 turbos, I think all the volvos with renix have the same type sensor. a lot of the volvos have timing settings for fuel with the same octaine rating as donkey wee so it should work quite well, just listen out for any pinking

That sounds about right! Our V40 (turbo!) can run on 91RON fuel...nuts!

Top crank sensor modding there, couldn't have done it better myself!!! Dont know about swapping the wires round, but results could easily be checked with a timing light, If you try this, let us know how you get on.
Havent been posting for a few days, decided to get in the garage and do some work on the engine instead of talking about it. Have built the bottom end of the engine, all std 440 turbo, apart from 300 sump and engine mount brackets, The 300 spigot bearing goes straight in the 440 crank,
The clutch has a different number of splines, so have used stock 300 centre plate, with 440 turbo cover plate. The engine wont fit as is as the throttle housing would be 4 inches INSIDE the heater
Also, the exhaust manifold locates the turbo squarely in the middle of the bake master cylinder
I have cut the manifold off at the flanges and turned it up side down wich puts the turbo at the front, I am not to sure what to do with the inlet side yet. Phoned recoprop today, he can make a steel prop with 2 uj's £175 plus vat he says he's done loads over the years so thats that problem sorted will keep you posted on further progress.

Excellent news on the progress! Would an early-style heater box help?

It will indeed - and it's great that it's one of 'our' cars! Wilder things have been done, but as it stands it'll be the hottest road-legal 300 in the country!

Thanks lads, just a quick update, have been looking at the standard injectors: they flow about 200 cc/min, enough for about 160 bhp, I dont think this will be enough, also the std volvo engine management is a big limmiting factor, as even with a super chip the boost can only be raised to 10 psi before hitting the upper limit of the airflow meter. With stock turbo I think 160 bhp is just about achiveable, but everything is going to be right on the limit, so I have decided to throw the stock management in the skip and fit omex 500 series instead.18 psi here we come

Damn, I'm liking the sound of this projecthuskyracer wrote:enough for about 160 bhp, I dont think this will be enough

Have you encountered Megasquirt? Programmable (plug in your laptop!)EMS (for both fuel and ignition), and the last group buy on Turbobricks was selling an assembled kit for about £150. It's a bit DIY, but is all well documented. You could get it installed and running for £250-300, easily.

The omex I already have, it was originaly going to be fitted to my beetle but it's been in the bottom of my wardrobe for about two years now, as the plans for my bug keep getting wilder the omex costs £500 ish but it is very user friendly, nice to map and does everything you could wish for in a £500 ecu. I realy didnt want to have to go this far with management as the ecu alone has effectively over doubled the price of the project but as it was 'in stock' I suppose it would be rude not to. The megasquirt stuff sounds interesting, especialy the price (is it jtbo thats got one?) where can i get more info on it?
Here is forum:
http://www.msefi.com/
Here is the 'thing':
http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html
I have one, just waiting to get fuelpump and few sensors and also Weller welder(word?) needed
As I need to change almost everything from intake side it costs bit more, but if you have already working fuel injection costs will be low as then no need for new manifold, injectors etc.
Some alternate megasquirt stuff goes here:
http://www.megasquirt.info/ms2/EDIS.htm
http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/
As you can see possibilites are almost unlimited because source code is free and lot of new stuff can be applied with just downloading new software and that part is free
Some require little hardware changes, but still much better than buying whole new unit
