4spd or 5spd?

Post by garth »

Hi all,

I was wondering which is the strongest box and which would be better suited to the F7P motor? I wouldn't mind putting the 5 speed in my daily for motorway driving and better fuel economy if it works.

Cheers in advance 340pw

5 speed, especially as it weighs less its an alloy casing not a cast iron one like the 4 speed.

? The ratios are the same... 5th is just bolted on the back, literally! 1-4 are the same ratios

Indeed. only difference in ratios is the final drive between the 1.4 (shorter) and 1.7 regardless of weather they are 4spd or 5spd. unfortunatley i haven got my book here at the mo so couldn't tell you what the ratios were.

Edit: Take a look in the green book for transmission here (page 3/4) http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... =36&t=7262 looks like a bit of a lottery regarding final drives!

1.4 5 speed - 3.82 final drive
1.4 4 speed/1.7/GLT - 3.64 final drive
360 GLE - 3.36 (IIRC)

For a 16v I'd go with a 5 speed 3.82 final drive gearbox, will give better acceleration than the others. I don't think strength will be an issue for any of them with the power of the 16v

With a 3.82 diff and 15 inch wheels, if you could hit 8000rpm in top you'd be doing 165mph. With a valver 140 should be easy, depending on how bad those aerodynamics really are.

Odd.
You had a 3.82/1 and 13" wheels and all you hit was a wall.
