Rpm is only high at speed if you keep your foot down (in my experience). Get the car to speed then back off the gas as much as you can without losing speed. Find that sweet spot and the car cruises at low enough revs. I'm sure I was getting low 30s mpg in my old vario. That was mixed driving.
It's only gone slightly higher recently, it may just be a statisical blip.
In the fuel consumption column (if you click on the link in the sig), it only puts up a figure in that column if that fuelling is marked as a full tank. It only usually gets a full fueling when I'm using it and on those occassions it gets a mixed bag of driving with a fair chunk of motorway and trunk road miles. When I'm not using it, it gets 25L a fill. I'll have to look back on the spreadsheet as we're at odds on the figures here.
It's better a steady speed cruising. I will do an economy run when I'm next over.
