Yeah well, a Volvo 300 and "style" ;-) I dunno :-)

They're certainly collectable, the bread-and-butter cars always disappear the quickest, but they'll just never be worth millions ...

The search continues..Mac very kindly went and viewed this car for me on Friday and it's certainly not as good as it looks in the pictures. Plenty of rust and too much of a project for me. It did have some good points - 4 new michelins and 12 months mot but quite severe rust in parts and certainly not a "keeper".

Thanks for your comments and support I'm sure it will be worth the wait for the right one to come along.

Afternoon all,

Now Jen has made her decision I'll "publish" my findings for anybody else who may be interested.

Car is a bit of a "curates egg" (good in parts) and can be sumarised as follows:-

Good -
Genuine "Redline", One owner car, has a service history (first 10 years with Volvo dlr), 4 new tyres (Michelins), 12 months MOT,
cabin is in resonable order (rear cabin is excellent for age), has 2 spare wheels (steel original and a matching alloy), car ran well
when warmed up. 60.000mls appears supported by s/hist, the body is for the most part very good as is the paint.

Not Good -
Severe rust in n/s/f corner of bonnet, severe rust in both ends of bonnet slam panel (I regard the slam panel as structural which
questions the MOT validity), RFL end of this month, corrosion starting in n/s/r wheel arch, undebonnet is utterly filthy, both
tailgate gas struts are u/s, was not easy to start from cold, drivers door panel delaminating, all alloy wheels have kerbing damage
(although none is severe), o/s/f wing badge broken, drivers door outer trim unglued and coming away, boot area in a disgusting
state with much staining and evidence of water leakage, parcel shelf broken and filthy, interior had an "interesting" odour, the
front valence could not be inspected as the Redline model has a "chin" spoiler but rust can be seen breaking out from beneath,
rust in the tailgate hinges.

Conclusion -

Basically a potentially sound car but needing considerable work to bring it to an acceptable standard,
NOT a good example to base a "keeper" on.
Probably worth £500 (for the tyres and years MOT). If there was no corrosion at all it would make good buy, but as it stands,
I think not. It will, if NOT viewed, probably make £600 - £700 on the bay.

you get the idea!

Hi Mac,

Gee, Jen (I feel) should not touch it with a bargepole.

The one I saw for her last Saturday week in Oxshot is a gem and worth every penny being asked

Cheers

Paula

Eeep, I've had 300's fail for less on that cross member. Not a horrific fix, as long is it hasn't spread to the inner wing too (and even then, not the worst place to deal with) but enough to scare most away I'd have thought.

In fairness to the tester, the slam panel will pass because:
a) it's not in a grey shaded area in Appendix C of the Testers' manual. Even if it is, it's still not a fail unless (b) or (c) also applies.
b) it's not within 30cm of a steering, suspension, braking or seat belt mounting.
c) it doesn't adversely affect braking or steering.
d) There isn't a sharp edge or projection, caused by corrosion or damage, which renders the vehicle dangerous to other road users, including pedestrians.

So whilst it is something that needs doing, it's not something that necessarily brings into question the MOT certificate validity. If on the other hand, you can demonstrate that it is a "prescribed area"... I take everything back.

Was it down as an advisory?

Understand exactly what your saying Rich, but I think you're being a little "letter of the law"
"I" regard that crossmember as structural in that it supports the panel that carries the rad,
the h/lamps and bonnet catch - it also forms part of the frontal impact absorption path.

No there were NO advisories.

The e-bay description of the car states "practically no rust whatsoever" - quite plainly the
sellers idea of no rust is rather different to mine!

I do not claim that the car is un-redeemable or not a worthwhile project - it is. I merely
consider that it is not the car for my "client" who is seeking a "keeper" without too much
work to get it to a standard. She is also working to a budget, and has the time to wait for
the right example to come along.

I was happy to drive 150mls round trip to view this car and if by doing that I saved Jen a far
far longer journey, only for her to be disappointed in the car (or my assessment of it), then
my journey was worthwhile.

Mac

ps - Rich, parcel gone off to Mark this morning - didn't get a chance Sat. ATB.

I completely agree with your very fair assessment of the car.

I was of course giving the tester the benefit of the doubt and pointing the finger at the actual test itself. If he had failed it on such a thing, I'd be yelling and pointing that he hadn't done his job properly. Now you tell me it wasn't down as an advisory, so I'll yell and point out that with corrosion that obvious, it should have been "pass AND advise" (advisories being tester arse-covering, and I've seen some odd ones).

If it had to undergo a periodic technical inspection (PTI) of an Irish flavour - the NCT - it would have failed.

PS Ta for parcel. I'll let Mark know.

This is surprisingly rough looking - I'd avoid at the price it's going at now, the blue 360 GLE looks a much better deal
