Theres supposed to be a gasket between the air filter and the carb??? No wonder I have random issues, neither my 1.4 or 1.7 have them

yeah, they're supposed to be there, but a tiny air leak is nether here nor there, particularly as its not subject to any manifold vacuum, only the gentle draw from the carb. Look for other causes for your random probs Chris.
