It happens always when changing with normal or faster speed... up or down. Fifth gear is ok, mostly
the problem occurs when shifting to second or third gear. When there's a need for a fast acceleration I have to change from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd fast and the noise is tearing me apart. Has someone of the previous owners raped the gearbox or could it just be the clutch?
Oh, and there's yet another thing that I'm a little worried about. When shifting at higher speeds I hear a low sound from the behind. I'm not releasing the clutch too quickly or anything...

If it sounds a bit like tyre squeal thats the funky rubber bit that the driveshaft connects to the back axle via (it's been a long time since I've been under it ) I have a feeling this is the same rubber bit 5lab's on about, so the two are probably related. That would only be heard up to 3rd gear though I would have thought

that squeally stuff can be done in any gear, if you floor it @ 3k rph (max torque) the torque tube cant take it anymore..

If your gear changes are getting tougher or make a grinding sound you clutch cable might need adjusting - ie you get the grinding noise when changing gear as the clutch doesnt fully disengage. Further, the seals on the gearbox can fail meaning you loose oil. Lack of oil will make the gear changes stiff and more clunky sounding.

I know this prob isnt relevant to the 340 but 400series have a tendency to stretch their clutch cables so as it ages, the gear changes get harder and getting into reverse can be a problem ( and first too )

I'm interested in the driveshaft rubber change. Any more info guys? My 1991 340 has a noisy propshaft, sound like daga daga daga at idle!!!

just replace the entire shaft. £30 from a breakers

I think that the clutch disengages well. Well, maybe I should try adjusting the cable anyway. When I push it all the way down, it starts to make a weird gurgling sound...

My shaft does that daga daga too when the engine is cold and idle revs are a little low. Maybe I should replace the shaft.
These transmission problems are pissing me off right now.

Have you measured the height of your clutch pedal from the floor? In the specs it should be 6 inches, as the clutch wears the pedal rises.

My clutch used to make a clattering noise with the pedal up and the engine idling. A mechanic reported that it was something harmless knocking on the housing, it still comes and goes but I have not bothered trying to fix it. A few passengers have asked me if I drive a deisel
