Any big American V8 :) Can't beat it.

Was it Ali's car at the meet that sounded superb, I think it was. It sounded like a rally car rather than a stock car, due to the exhaust :)

I agree with the earlier comment that Volvo 850's sound good, the 2.5 5cyl at least, although, it's just 'nice', it dosn't melt your heart like a roaring V8 :)

Yeah, know it well. Marshalled quite a few events he's entered so get to see it right up close. Also had a proper look around it at Goodwood last year. Fantastic engineering!!

big block v8 all the way , especially with twin holleys on pancake filters and running on open headers ( the car I shared was a plymouth Barracuda ) it had been adapted split exhaust manifolds so you could run it throught the sidepipes or with open headers at the pull of a chain in the cockpit, also had line lock on the front brakes and a bleach dispenser inside the rear arches , very impressive when doing burnouts lol

I'd go for the Ferrari 355. The screaming sound at higher revs gives me a shiver trough the spine sm2

355's sound a tad good. Specially when you're driving one around 130-140mph... :P

and your all too young to remeber this beauty

There is this fascinating legend of "The Beast", a 27 litre Rolls Royce Merlin engined car originally built in the seventies. Information is very scarce on the web, so I've collected some stuff here.

So what do we know? The car was built in the seventies, has a Merlin engine minus the supercharger(s?), was built by a guy named John Dodd, and had the roof off a Capri. Here's some pictures

Apparently the engine developed 750bhp at 2500rpm, and the car was geared to exceed 200mph. Legend goes that this speed was exceeded on several occasions on the German Autobahns.

Then it caught fire, was rebodied in fibreglass with a Rolls Royce grille, Rolls Royce took John Dodd to court, he removed the grille and moved to Spain. Here's a picture of the car in it's second guise

In June 2005 I looked up the registration number from these photos on the vehicle licencing agency website using the make "Rolls Royce" and found this:

this means that the beast is currently either taxed or SORNed, and is still on the original plate. And it's still beige! I'll try to find out more and get better pictures. I believe it belongs to John's son Paul now and may reside in Surrey.

just found this

27-litre Rover SD1
V12 tank-engined monster

Yes, that’s 27-litres, not 2.7-litres as the DVLA keep writing on the registration document of Charlie Broomfield’s Rover SD1. Charlie’s fitted a 27-litre V12 Meteor engine. The Meteor’s a non-supercharged version of the famous Merlin V12 that powered Spitfires to victory in the Battle of Britain. Charlie didn’t think he’d need a supercharger so went for the tank version of the engine. He fitted it in an SD1 simply because he needed a car with a deep bulkhead – as you can see, the engine’s quite big.

With 12 cylinders, two overhead cams and 4-valves per cylinder, the Meteor’s a pretty advanced design for the 1930s. It churns out a lazy 650bhp at 2500rpm. At least it did.As though managing to fit one in an old Rover wasn’t enough, Charlie’s now decided to design and build his own electronic fuel-injection system using 24 Rover 800 injectors, a home made plenum and scratch built ECU. Look out for the car on PPC stands at car shows this summer and read about its progress in PPC magazine every month.
