looks like two bolts facing the opposite way, are you saying on the reverse of these is an allen key hole??

just checked, there is no allen key holes in these boltts, there just the same as the top bolts although they are facing to opposite way..
They look like 14mm bolts.

Ah right, have you removed the small inspection panel from the lower half of the bell hgousing looking from front to back?? Most of the bolts you can get to, however IIRC one of them is a real PITA and you need a universal end or a wobbley end To get on to the bolt!!

inspection panel?? i can see the 2 bolts quite clearly but the cross member/steering rack are in the way so that i cant get a socket or ring spanner on it

take the engine out!!!!!! if I cant sort this tomorrow it will sit till the weekend when I can Hire a hoist to do it... i would rather get it done tomorrow though so I can drive it

you will have to explain it all mate, I hate mechanics and so dont normally get under cars.

Right directly behind the crossmember from the front you can see a small plate attached to the front side of the bell housing you need to remove this

all that I saw while i was under there was the cross member and the 2 bolts on the bell housing. an in if your were under the car with your feet to the back.

), but you know we're talking about the 1.7, right? I've never looked in detail at either, but it sounds very much like you guys are talking about two different engines...

Both engines layouts are basically the same and both have an inspection plate at the base of the bell housing!!
