Those beams can go rusty (and hence weak), so maybe that is the problem? Either way, the well-known (even if not correct!) advice is that those beams tend to bend if you jack from them.
Yes, that illustrates the chassis rail problem perfectly.

Absolutely do NOT use the diff/gearbox for jacking. The 360 uses aluminium brackets and these get corroded enough (galvanic action) with the steel based bushes and need replacing every 10 years or so. On a 340 you might damage the bushes.

Thread revived for a second time but hey ho.
I need to jack up the rear of my 360 to replace tyres. I have a pair of axle stands but unfortunately only a scissor jack. Also one of the jacking points is knackered. Any ideas on how to get it onto stands? and also where to put the stands as the jacking point is of no use
Cheers

Front or rear?
Although... if the jacking points are shagged and you only have the stock jack, your options are going to be welding or buying a proper jack.

Rear nearside jacking point is knackered, will be jacking up the back first and replacing rears then doing the front

for both jacking and axle-stands use the rear axle.
i wouldn't use a scissorjack for it though.. if it's your only option make sure that the car is secure on the front

hmm may see if I can find a friend with a trolley jack, what do you mean by "make sure that the car is secure on the front"?

a pair of bricks (or something similar) on each side of the front wheel, with a flat surface and a proper trolley-jack this isn't nescassary, but if you have no choice and need to use a scissor jack securing the front wheels into place will prevent the jack from tumbling over while you're jacking the car up

A 2 tonne jack costs less than 20 quid over here, please get one. Cars are heavy and make a huge crunching noise if you drop one.

Small ones are only £20, and I fully encourage you to get one...but...
...a big one which costs £100 or so will be the best £100 you'll ever spend on a tool, I reckon.
cheers

I'm a little worried about stories of the tube bending under jacking, my car lands on its sump guard onto that tube/mounting points!
I always jack my car from the tubular cross member when it hasn't got its sump guard on. When the sump guard is on I just jack on the sump guard, which is fixed to the tube at the front with one big exhaust bracket (a rather horrendous long term botch!) and on two points on the cross member at the rear. So far the car seems to have stood up to jacking and landing on the tube. I have got two spare tubes but obviously bending the chassis mounting points would be a pain.
Have I just been incredibly lucky (and foolish) so far or is my 340 not quite as rotten as it looks (was very impressed at how it made a neat job of destroying the Clio!) and a bit stronger than the ones that have had issues with jacking?
I was intending to mount my sump guard properly on brackets welded to one of the spare tubes, is the tube/mounting point not up to this kind of punishment?
