i think the PCB wiring of the Smiths unit is not compatible with the VDO tachometer.

either V+, ground or signal are not coming through, thats for sure.

Agreed, they're totally different. For a start, they connect to the housing differently.

But the tacho under the bonnet is a Smiths one isn't it?

Tach troubles

Tacho in Omars pic is a Smiths unit so we know he's trying to fit the correct unit.

Omar, Forget the 'regulator' it has nothing to do with the tacho. It's actually called a 'Multi Function Unit' and controls the following:-

It provides a stabilised 10v+ supply for the fuel and coolant temperature gauges.
It provides 'flasher' relay function for the indicators.
It operates the low fuel and high coolant temp.warning lights.
The dash warning lamps operate through it.
It provides needle dampening for the fuel gauge.

They were known to be troublesome BUT it not your tacho problem.

If you have visible damage to the printed circuit that is a likely cause so correct that first (or by-pass the connections from the wiring at the plug direct to the tacho - don't connect direct to the accumulator - you need the 12v+ to be ignition controlled).

This should get it working in the cluster, but the start delay still worries me - that does rather sound like a problem in the unit itself (but you won't know unit it's all fitted in and working).

Good luck, Mac.

Thanks for the clear-up on that Multi function unit Mac, I had guessed it just provided a stable voltage supply to all the electrical gauges, so they didn't misread due to voltage changes. I didn't realise it provided the flasher function as well... something for me to look into on another project I'm working on.

Hi Chris,

Just to confirm - you only find an MFU on Smiths Instrument clusters. '86' on VDO units are much more conventional. (normal indicator relay etc.)

Mac.

:D Legend... those last few words have saved a very baffled looking Chris. It does work how I orginally thought... on my cars ;) This might explain Petavius' problem she has at the moment though!

Thanks again Mac, back to Omars problem!

Thanks all for the help guys.
I have connected a tachometer.
At me it was not simple a signal with RENIX .а when I brought it a separate wire simply did not wait the moment of inclusion. The tachometer joins in 5 seconds after start-up of the motor and in panels of devices and when I separately connected it. From RENIX the plait from 4-5 wires departs including grey (pulse) here it has appeared cut off and two more what that brown wires with tips near to it from a plait leave. I have connected a wire to it and on a nut in.
:D :D

I have owned a 360 GLE 1985 model for 12 years and it has run up 60,000 km on the clock.
Last week the tacho worked interminably and then on Friday the battery went flat, a first time.
I did notice the charge light and some of the other lights were not always light when starting.
I have the Haynes book for the car and find that even with a magnifying glass reading the wiring diagram is almost impossible.

Does anybody out there have a wiring diagram for this model with plug colour codes and identification.
The other issue I believe is the tracks on the instrument cluster have finally failed.
