My 340 with the 3.82 back end pulls nearly as well as the 360 did with the baby carb on (as SteveP can confirm....teehee). I realise it doesn't close the gears up (i.e. you still come in at the same RPM in the next gear), but each gear pushes harder, since the box is a torque multiplier, and you're increasing the multiplication factor. I figure it's making the best of a bad job. The M4x series are known for having crappy ratios, especially 2 > 3.

I'd imagine that (assuming you're running stock sized wheels) the 4.78:1 might actually be 'too' short, unless the engine revs to crazy RPM. My idea is just to get rid of the 'economy' 3.36:1 diff and go a bit shorter than the injection diff (3.64), using the 3.82 from a B14 5 speed. I also have a 3.91 from an early 4 speed, but I'm worried that it's weaker (fewer teeth on the pinion), rare (in case it breaks), and too much like hard working swapping it into a 5 speed casing when I can just swap input end plates on the B14 M47.

Quaife do do a close ratio gearset for the M4x series (most likely just 1-4), but you better get ready to re-mortgage the house.

cheers
