I'd be the chap with the high mileage one (now 195k) It does show its wear a bit, with the occasional part requiring replacement, and it creaks and groans a bit more than a low-use one would, but it goes...and goes....and goes....and of course at nearly 200k, it is an extreme example! Providing there's a record of reasonable maintainance, I'd not worry about a B14 (1.4) car up to about 150k.

They're not that slow really....I had a play (from a level start at about 20mph) with a chap in a brand new Zafira (must have been a base-model petrol) tonight.....he eventually pulled past me at about 70. It'll keep up with traffic, put it that way.

I'd beat him down if you possibly can. At least here in England, you'd consider yourself to have done very well to have sold a 340 1.4 with any rust at all for £400. Perhaps thing are different over the sea

Don't worry about questions, we all had/have them! I'm dead keen on the 1.4, ran one for 5 years, and it held it's own with the 2.0glts on a flat straight until halfway through 3rd gear. Also could happily do 50+mpg on an 80mph motorway cruise. Don't be too stressed about it being a DL, all the spec'd parts can be changed if thats your thing scrappies are cheap. I do see your point on less to go wrong, but theres nothing super complex to worry about.

Good luck, beat that dealer down on price, rust if the worst enemy of the Volvo 300, not mechanical failure if it's serviced well.

Cheers James, I'm happy with it. The plan is to drive it for the winter and then start tidying it up when the weather improves.

Prevention is easier than cure, atleast address any areas to make them 'winter proof'

Fair comment about the rust, I suppose if it's left for the winter it can only get worse.

The bumpers, were they not all dark grey?
