True........ but it needs a service tbh, but I haven't had time, it's off to Swindon as well Friday! Plus I don't know if I'll be back in time on Saturday yet.

hi guys!

Im up for this - well the sunday at least... cant make saturdays... I can leave manchester at 8pm in theory on sat but sund morn is prob better

want me to bring anything for sunday? jack, ramps etc

if you are planning to swap the engine, you'll need some sockets which are 6mm and 7mm ( maybe get 8mm whilst your there ) allen heads but mounted in a 3/8 drive. Ive only got an 3/8 adaptor into which you slot in various size allen heads - but its not so good for the rear engine mount allen boltts ( there are 6 of them )

due to rust you need to hammer in ( its not terminal for the bolts but it does sound brutal ) a 6mm or 7mm solid allen head socket.... due to rust the heads are no longer perfect 6mm.

if you try to use the standard socket adaptor like ive got, you're more likely to round the allen heads

I borrowed a mates tool for the engine swaps Ive done

I know snap on do them.... havent managed to get them myself yet

:)

maybe i need to post pics to show what I mean... anyone get what I mean? :)

Good point that - the pass side rear engine mount should be relatively easy as it was removed not that long ago when we did the clutch, but the drivers side one has one seized and rounded bolt. We got round the problem by twisting the mount out of the way, but maybe with the judicious application of a set of mole grips, some WD40 and some heat...........??

I did however hear on the grapevine that you are intending to do the swap without a crane. For the sake of £20-30 from Machine Mart or HSS I think you should hire one. I remember doing a B14 swap on my 345 and although the engine didn't weigh that much compared to say a redblock access to easy lifting points is awkward and it does have to be lifted a fair way up to clear the front panel. Just hire one and save all the hassle plus the associated risk of injury. £30 for a crane is a lot cheaper than a set of osteopaths fees and 4 weeks off work due to a slipped disc!

That was my initial plan, on the basis that a B14 is pretty liftable between two, so four should be easy...but...clearly a hoist is preferable. Andy has one, but it's a fiddle to take it apart. I'm pretty sure DBS has one, and he's coming to the party - that might well be easier. If that fails, there's always HSS, etc. I only heard today that I have an engine (hopefully), so let's not get ahead of ourselves...:-P

I lent it to someone over the weekend who loaded it up and drove it to lincoln. I believe that the added stress of a whole load of weight in the boot and a heavy right foot lead to this problem.

at least, thats my excuse!

Heavy right foot....coming from the man with the hoontastic boostmobile :-P

You're both as bad as each other.....not getting round to altering the timing to work with 95 octane.....babying it by hooning round racing everything in sight :?

That reminds me, I put more 95 octane in the 240 today...must get out of that habit!

hi,

I've got a 2.1 84 240 --- cant use 95 octane as the compression is too high.

I've been running on lpg and then on unleaded with catrol lead replacement with octane booster - same stuf used on the 66 which needs it coz of the soft valve seats.

I know the only prob with the 2.1 is the compression rather than the valve seats.

can the ignition be retarded enough for 95?? if so, how come volvo didnt advise this and instead went the double head gasket and deeper water pump seal route

will the retarding would at low load and low revs? ie car can be moved but not a permanent solution??

cheers!

S

looking forward to sunday!!!! :)

There is no reason not to use normal unleaded in any 240.

We have been doing it ever since unleaded came to the pumps.

The car will have been run on 95 for the last 10+ years...but I have to admit, it did run much more happily on 98 octane.
