I removed the backing plates altogether.. but it would be easier to attach an airduct if you cut a hole in the backing plate.
@Carl, what vented brakes do you have that will fit? Do you mean just the disc or a disc/caliper combo (I'm guessing the latter).
I just got my volvo 240 4-Pot girlings in the mail, but they're the solid disc type (much to my dismay, but cant complain for 65 euro's).
I only knew of vented discs that might fit, but now it seems I either have to go to a big solid disc, keep the original or find a vented disc that's thin enough (not likely, needs to be 16mm).

I'm not sure if they will fit yet, so rather not say anything just yet. Chances are it wont work TBH, but we shall see.
I've got various discs to try, both with the standard caliper, with some 240 4-pots (which should bolt on) and some 480 calipers (which wont just bolt on).
I've been sorting out my new garage today, so hopefully next weekend I'll be able to finish it so I can get the car in there and start taking it apart!!

i read somewhere that e30 brakes can somehow be fitted on the 300 series?

Yeah I read that too. I'm gonna keep trying, but my main aim is to try and figure out something that will be cheap. If you want a truly outstanding setup you need to talk to Adam!

The E30 brakes are 24m's thick if 'm not mistaken, so bad luck for me I'm afraid. BTW.. no need to wait until your sure, just give me some type's that you think come close, and I can find measurements etc on the internet and see if it comes close to what I need.
I couldnt even get the stock solid's to overheat, so I'm sure that with the added heat-capacity of the girlings+ bigger discs it'll be better still.

What I said about the back plates is wrong I'm reremembering it as the early cars had vents and lter ones did not. They did away with the vents when the wheels changed.
Rather than removing the back plates well ducted air will give more cold air flow than simply removing the covers.

Early 300's had twin pot opposed calipers, these are a bolt on and will possibly give more stopping power, anyone looked at just bolting the 240 calipers on with stock disks? i actually havent.
I dont run back plates at all on my brakes and have no problems, remember i am running 280mm vented disks which are 22mm thick!! Not on standard calipers though!!!
If people are looking for compatible disks etc forget about looking at disks with 4 x 100 pcd as the hub on the front doesnt use it, IIRC as the disks bolt from behind the pcd is around 4 x 96/98. so any disks that are 4 stud can be redrilled and possibly even some that are 5 stud!!!

the early 240's used a non vented disc with a 4 pot caliper. i tried to get some last week but they sold for too much. i've also just got some ap 4 pots for non vented discs[you can get spacers to make for vents] which i will be trying to fit very soon, maybe in the christmas holidays. i will keep you informed.......
