Hi now let me introduce you to Tiffany!
Tried out Tiffany on M6 today for first time ..was i surprised how comfoprtable and smooth she is ..holds and picks up speed very well..and very surprisingly quite too..its a damn shame Volvo dont have the same build quality anymore...only problems i saw was bloody bigger car drivers picking on the poor little car..

I'm not convinced it would tbh mate. Reason we ask is that they all came with Volvo Lifetime Care... which basically stated that all the time that it had a genuine service history, then the car would be garenteed for life. With the situation with parts drying up... we've been hunting out a car that we can actually force them to sort out the parts issue for

That's a lovely one Mo! Is it a 4 speed or a 5 speed? The 4 speed isn't as bad as I thought it might be (although mine being a very early car has a shorter diff), but the 5 speed is the one to have, and swapping boxes is relatively easy (especially on a 340) if you want to do the 'upgrade'.
cheers

Hi James...shes a 4 speed ...i am finding her so far excellent shame i never noticed 340 series before ..i am hoping to start refurbing/preserving her this weekend starting with engine bay..then brakes followed by suspension..someone has suggested fitting a Turbo lo but i think thats going abit too far..i want to keep her original as much as possible..as you see in pics shes hasnt got much rust and her under carriage is clean and i already waxoyled her...hopefully she should last a while..are 340 exhausts normally abit noisy sounding?foggyjames wrote:That's a lovely one Mo! Miy Vario had service history from new from Volvo, until Thomas' of Aylesbury shut, then it went to being a bunch of monkeys. But it's technically not reached the enxt service interval......... 11800 miles...... and it had a good few years of being serviced too often!

The exhaust should be pretty quiet. I suspect you have a blow. A complete system from Volvo is only about £100 - cheaper than many 'exhaust specialists'.
I wouldn't bother with a turbo, unless you're talking about a 1.7 swap. The NA 1.4 whips along ok, and I think performance isn't really what a base-model car should be about. I totally agree about the excellent feeling those cars have. It's like having an old-school turbodiesel in a way - slow, relatively efficient, and has the feeling it'd just about go on forever. Redblock powered cars have that same feeling, but all bar the most efficient give you the feeling you're well and truly paying for that overengineering in terms of fuel efficiency.
I totally get a kick out of being confident about being able to fix almost any problem at the roadside. I've got out of quite some scrapes with that car. It's the student car I never had. Nessy (with 196k on the clock when the much-abused engine let go) even managed to make it the 15 miles home following a little bodgery.
One thing I would say...I'd keep the car out of the winter salt as much as you can - or at least wash it regularly - at the very least once a week. The salt can eat these cars alive. Admittedly Nessy's paint is pretty well shot, but that car went from white to brown within 6 weeks last winter.
cheers

The sills tend to rust from the inside outwards too, and you don't notice it till it's too late and the bubbles start. Might be worth removing those plastic bungs in the sills and spraying some rust-protection inside them (although I don't know enough about them to recommend any make in particular). Check the water-runoff holes are free & unblocked afterwards though ...
+1 about the salt - it's a real killer.
