When i got mine it was running pretty bad, no power, backfiring. A/F meter had a stuffed sensor. when i replaced that the power problem was fixed and a bit of the backfiring went as well but still idled like crap and backfired a bit. I went and got the injectors balanced, replaced the spark plugs and leads (old ones were x-firing badly) and there was pretty much no backfiring.
I'd suggest doing a compression test also, maybe problem there?
Make sure that convoluted pipe that goes from the meter to the throttle body isnt cracked, car started to run crap a while ago cause it split and unmetered air was entering cant remember if it was backfiring, but definately sounded sick.
Also i've tried a variety of fuels (though not the supermarket fuels yet), the mobil and shell top shelf stuff run ok, but even just plain unleaded works fine. And theres no noticeable power difference with optimax, even if they say otherwise.
The bits and pieces there are easily obtainable, theres several volvo wreckers down melbourne way. To get the injectors done professionally is about $150 so leave that till u have exhausted all the other options.
