i think the cubic capacity of the 1.7 is 1721cc-maybe its b172 as in 1721?
i could be worng-it could also be as in 2 valves per cyclinder e.g the volvo b230 (2.3 8 valve) and the volvo b234 (2.3 16valve)
probs the 1721cc thingy though?

correct, volvo re-named the renault engines b14 after 1397cc and b172 after 1721cc

volvo even came up with its own design other than renault for the ribits holding the engine code plate

redblock name configuration is a completely different story though.
